Mudda's big move!

Thought it was about time I updated you all on the current goings on chez mudda.

We're moving back to Scotland from Herts in about 10 days time .

We've had an offer accepted on a gorgeous timber house on the shores of Loch Lomond in the National Park, so we'll be surrounded by forest.

We've still had no offers on our house darn sarf yet so my lovely mum and dad are taking a 2nd mortgage on their house to tide us over until it does sell - we'll still have to cover 2 mortgages though

So - in a very short time I will no longer be anywhere near Suburbia and I'll need a new name! Dh is "Muddahubby" so he'll be needing a new name too unless you creative types can think of a name that includes "mudda"!!

Also - has anyone moved with Pickfords before? They've given us a far better quote than anyone else. What do I need to get organised before the big move?

Be prepared for many more panicky posts between now and next week!

We used pickfords and were completely satisfied.

The packing service was mad though! They did things like pack a single unwashed knife in 10 layers of tissue paper and taped up and packed empty cereal packets. They arrived at 8.30 a.m. and i wet out for the day with DD leaving DH to oversee so maybe that was the problem!

muddaofsuburbia · 21/10/2004 15:39

Hi DelGirl

Dh has requested a job transfer from his office down south to the company's other office in Glasgow and amazingly they've said yes.

I'm a SAHM at the moment with ds who's 2 and only just pg with no2 (7wks!!). I was a youth worker before ds and I've got a good friend from uni who lives in the next village who's desperate for help with her youth work. As soon as she found out I was moving she sent me the full application forms and police check stuff. Hopefully, I'll be able to get involved with that. Even voluntary would be great cos I love it so much.

Other than that I'll have to learn how to start a fire every morning and work a Rayburn range oven (circa 1953) and potentially chop wood. Also would love to start living a little bit more ecologically and cheaply, so will read up on that. The current owners have an organic garden, which sounds like a fab hobby - especially if you can eat the results

Marialuisa - how long did the packing actually take - was it a whole working day? We've got a 3 bed house and garage to pack.

Delgirl

Just suddenly realised the biggest reason for this house.

As soon as dh and I walked through the door, my eyes filled up. The house just has a great, peaceful and comfy atmosphere and we know we have to share it with people.

The way the house is laid out means that the 4th bedroom (en suite) has its own staircase and its own front door.

We really feel strongly that we should keep that room free for anyone who need to get away from it all and have a break. The landscape and scenery surrounding the house is breathtaking. We're right on the West Highland Way which is popular for walkers.

In the long term, we'd like to run the house as a retreat for people who want to escape for a weekend or so, a bolthole for refreshment, respite, recharging and any other "re" words you can think of. But we haven't thought of quite how we'd achieve that. Running it as a business seems at odds with the aims we've got, if you see what I mean. I don't want to run a B&B.

Phew...

Well, we were in a similar house/ level of stuff to you and they arrived at 8.30 a.m. left by 2.30p.m. to start first leg of the journey.

deegward · 21/10/2004 16:18

mudda, we used pickford for the opposite move, and yes it will take a whole day for them to pack. So jealous of you moving back 'home' even though it is the WEST. I think the housing market is just really slow just now, esp round here. How have you managed not to be tied to a date yet, considering the Scottish angle? I think this is the hardest way to move, South to North, so my heart goes out to you.

I'm sure it will all go right, as my granny would say " what's meant for you will no go past you" Take care

muddaofsuburbia · 21/10/2004 16:30

Hi Deegward

Will studiously ignore your anti-west comments and still let you visit

Remember you'll have more fun at a Glasgow funeral than an Edinburgh wedding

Although our offer was accepted, there have been so many delays involving boundaries and ownership of various bits of land, that we never actually signed the contract. So that's worked out brilliantly from our point of view. Still haven't signed for this new date either, but both sides know that we're not going to back out anyway.

Thinking calm thoughts...

deegward · 21/10/2004 16:37

...and i thought the only good thing to come out of Glasgow was an Edinburgh train?

Keep delaying, and bake some bread for the next viewings, who wouldn't want mudda's house!

I am reminded everytime I go back home how bad Edinburgh is, ie Glasgow - You'll stay for your tea?, Edinburgh - You'll have HAD your tea! so so so true. I find Watford and London folk friendlier than my Edinburgh kin, sad but true.

muddaofsuburbia · 21/10/2004 16:47

Deegward - have an excellent book you would appreciate:

Edinbuggers vs Weegies (Why Edinburgh is Slightly Superior to Glasgow)

turn it over and it becomes:

Weegies vs Edinbuggers (Why Glasgow Smiles Better Than Edinburgh)

by Ian Black

v v v v funny

will have to get it

DelGirl · 21/10/2004 20:47

Sounds completely fab and I'm so . I used to do voluntary SN youth work and had a great time. You'll have to post pics of your new surroundings. Best of luck with the move.

muddaofsuburbia · 11/11/2004 14:05

Right. It's definitely all going to plan. We're moving out on Monday and moving in on Tuesday!

I'm trying to wash and iron every piece of stray clothing/bedding so Pickfords don't have to pack my knickers.

Anything I should be doing between now and Monday to get organised? Am 10 wks pg and feeling crap and tired too

Prettybird · 11/11/2004 14:26

Good luck with yuor move MoS.

Maybe we'll be able to get up enough impetus to have a meet up in the West of Scotland!

Any movement on your "old" house yet?

muddaofsuburbia · 11/11/2004 14:31

Old house still unsold. We had a ridiculously low offer on Monday that we refused. Our bridging loan is now in place thanks to my fantastic parents. Just found out my dad's paid our stamp duty too!

A friend is going to housesit for us once we move so the house won't be completely empty - I can imagine the kids round here having a field day if they thought there was an empty next door!

I'd love to have a meetup with Scottish MNers - the sooner the better methinks

OP posts:
nailpolish · 11/11/2004 14:40

Kayleigh · 11/11/2004 14:43
