3 Men go into a restaurant together and have a meal. The bill is £30. The men each put £
10 on the table. Waitress comes & takes it to the owner & says "they had to wait ages for a
meal, can we give them discount?"... "Take £5 off the total" says the owner...

The waitress is distressed by the task of dividing £5 by 3 men... (Blonde Waitress).... So she
pockets £2 and gives the 3 men £1 each...

So thet end up paying £9 each (£9 x3men = £27) + £2 tip for waitress... Total = £29.

The 3 men paid £30. Where did the missing £1 go???

£30 - £2 = £28, not £27 - can't get past that atm though!

Wallace · 30/09/2004 20:08

The nine pounds they each paid includes the 2 pound tip for the waitress

SoupDragon · 30/09/2004 20:09

The 3 men actually had to pay a £27 bill (£25 discounted meal plus £2 tip). Which they did 3 x £9

I love this one - I wind my students up with it.

Do you want to know how it works, or is it more fun to work it out?

fisil · 30/09/2004 20:11

Oh soupdragon, spoilt my fun!

sorry posted too quickly

so 30 - 3 = 27

  • 2 for the waitress = 25

so they each paid 9
9times 3 = 27 which includes the £2 for the waitress.

I can't really explain what I mean...but am I right?

Wallace · 30/09/2004 20:26

Thats true, I think I will be very giving and let you "win"...

SoupDragon · 30/09/2004 20:32

Chortle! It's like a playground fight - you gave in too easily!

cp3 · 02/10/2004 09:41

i still dont get it

deegward · 02/10/2004 10:48

Me too I think I must be thick no get it. Cause to begin with the bill was £30 take off £5 =25

Waitress thick so takes a £2 tip, then gives £3 back still makes £30, but 3x9 = 27 + 2 tip = 29

Naugh I think I need to dye my hair blonde, don't get it, getting angry now

SoupDragon · 02/10/2004 12:12

The bill was £30 but £5 was taken off for delays. Therefore the bill was, infact, £25 plus a £2 tip which is £27. Each diner paid £10 and got £1 change.

champs · 02/10/2004 23:13

but the waitress already took the £2

marthamoo · 02/10/2004 23:17

Aaargh...maths....

mieow · 02/10/2004 23:17

have looked and looked at this all day, think I have got it and then think, and its confuses me. £25+£2=27+3=30 but each man paid £9 9x3=27+£2=29.... I dunno!!!

SofiaAmes · 03/10/2004 00:44

You are mixing up two different sums. Either you look at the men's side, OR you look at the restaurant's side.

Men's side: They pay £10 each, less £1 refund, so pay £9 each, so a total of £27 leaves the pockets of the men.

Restaurant's side: They receive £30. £3 of it gets given back to the men, so the restaurant receives £27. (£2 of that £27 is in the waitress's pocket). The amount that left the men's pocket (£27) is the same amount that arrived in the restaurant (£27).

The extra pound was never there! Confusing the original bill with the discounted bill!

The bill is finally settled at £25 + £2 tip = £27. This divided by the three men = £9 each.

i.e. the £27 pounds they pay includes the tip - so 9*3 = 27 - 2 = 25. Not plus 2!!

mieow · 03/10/2004 21:29

I see

champs · 05/10/2004 00:16

thats why i said the waitress already took the £2
