While we're on books and music, any other cinephiles out there? Have just come back from seeing Almodovar's Talk to Her, anyone else seen it?

Didn't fancy Gangs of New York after the terrible reviews but went to see City of God instead. Although v. violent I found it totally interesting and realistic because I have been to Rio and seen the favelas. Also excellent filming. A cross between The Harder They Come, Reservoir Dogs and Carlito's Way.

I'm looking forward to seeing 'about Schmidt' glad to hear it's good.Didn't know about the terrible reviews for "Gangs of new York',went to see it last week.Cam ignore the reviews,it was the best film I've seen since 'minority report'even better actually.Daniel Day Lewis for me stole the show with his character and Leo was fantastic in it.It's very long and violent but exciting and visual.I would guesss they slagged it off for the historical acuracies? But I thought it was just a good story.I hate violent films and haven't seen resevoir dogs because of that so when dh said to me'ready for some gore'when we sat down to watch it I thought 'oh no,I'm going to hate it'but it was bearable.

cityfreak, go to the 'fancying weird famous people' thread right now!

spacemonkey · 31/01/2003 17:17

Watched Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia last week - best film I've seen in AGES and now in my top 5 all time faves. His new film Punch Drunk Love comes out early Feb - can't wait.

Anyone seen The Banger Sisters? Any opinions? I saw Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon being interviewed on (ahem) Richard and Judy earlier in the week and it really made me want to see it!

emsiewill · 31/01/2003 17:35

Anyone seen Chicargo yet? Any good? Hoping to go and see it next week. Saw "The Wild Thornberries" last week (dd1's birthday party) - enjoyed it, as did all the kids, 14 of them (2 3yr-olds. 2 4 yr olds and the rest 6 and above), and only 1 of them didn't sit transfixed for the whole film.

I saw Chicago on Wednesday night - I thought it was fabulous - I have seen the stage version several times as it is a bit of a favourite, and I thought that the film interpretation was extremely good, although they excluded one of my favourite tunes and changed the end somewhat - it still worked, and in these times of Big Brother etc, had quite a lot ot say about the dark side of fifteen minutes of fame.

I fancy the Banger Sisters as well, heard GH and SS interviewed on Steve Wright yesterday, also The Hours about Virginia Woolf

Fionn · 31/01/2003 19:01

Interesting to hear that Chicago is good - I saw the stage show and loved it. Saw The Quiet American which was very good, Michael Caine excellent as always. Also want to see The Hours - had to look twice at the photos to believe it really was Nicole looking so plain!

i've heard mixed things about the quiet american, but would like to see it nonetheless - will probably end up with the book as usual! speaking of which have just read the hours - overrated i thought, maybe the film will be better.

bossykate · 31/01/2003 19:23

oh btw, i really like michael caine too, i think he gets unfairly derided sometimes. the man who would be king is one of my favourite films.

Fionn · 31/01/2003 19:27

It's one of mine too! And I loved him in Alfie, even though he was a pig. And he was fantastic in Get Carter.

Thought Gangs of New York was a bit violent but D D Lewis looked so cool! Really enjoyed Chicago. Want to see City of Gods but I expect it'll never make out to the provinces.

eidsvold · 31/01/2003 19:35

Oh the last movie I saw at the cinema was training day - long before dd ( 6 mths) was born. dh was given Lotr on dvd and we have yet to watch that. Was intending to see catch me if you can at the weekend. We were going to take dd to grandma's and then go out to he movies and dinner by OURSELVES!! ( first time since dd arrived) however mil lives in Kent and we are in Essex and so will not be making the trip tomorrow. do not want to get stuck on the m25 with baby in tow. Oh well perhaps next weekend!!

CAM · 01/02/2003 17:57

bk The Quiet American is my favourite Graham Greene book so I really want to see the movie.

batey · 01/02/2003 21:15

Anyone seen "One Hour Photo" or know when it's out on video?

lou33 · 02/02/2003 10:30

I want to see it too Batey,I think it's out in February, but don't hold me to that!

Holly02 · 02/02/2003 10:45

I saw Chicago last week - it was brilliant, will probably see it again. Saw Catch Me if You Can yesterday, thought it was pretty good too.

Crunchie · 02/02/2003 18:09

It's interesting that some of you loved Chicago, as I saw it last night and was quite disappionted, sorry. I have seen the stage show and felt that it didn't add anything, it stuck too closely to some of the set peice dances, and felt (to me) as if you were almost watching a film of the stage show (if that makes sense). I loved Moulin Rouge and expected Chicago to have some more of these huge styled dance scence, when most of them (bar the ciruc one) felt qiute small and intimate. I am not saying it wasn't a fun film, it was, but I just thought it lacked something!!

spacemonkey · 02/02/2003 20:13

Saw Donnie Darko last night and am left feeling v thick - dp and i were totally confused! Anyone care to explain what it was all about? And why was that panto rabbit so funny?!

tallulah · 06/02/2003 13:51

I've seen One Hour Photo, batey. It was v spooky & cleverly done.

This week been to see The Banger Sisters (following Steve Wright interview). Took 17 yo DD. Both loved it. V funny film, had a lot to say about how people see you.

Also seen Ghost Ship. Didn't think much of it. V similar storyline to 2 different films on Sky recently. (Why DO people on an abandoned ship all split up to look around?!)

megg · 06/02/2003 20:15

Anyone seen Two Weeks Notice with Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock yet? Thinking of going next week.

Fionn · 24/02/2003 13:11

Have recently seen Chicago, Gangs of New York and The Hours. I agree with Crunchie on Chicago, probably because I saw the stage show too, I found the film disappointing. I thought Richard Gere was miscast, very wooden. Gangs of New York was very entertaining but bloody. D D-Lewis was fantastic. Leonardo not bad but a bit too lightweight for the role. And The Hours was superb I thought. Very depressing though, don't go if you're feeling down! All three main actresses were outstanding. It's a very moving and thought-provoking film, I recommend it. Probably one to see with a girlfriend rather than a bloke though, there's not a lot of "action"!

I've seen Two Week's Notice an was disappointed. I saw Chicago and enjoyed it but haven't seen the show and hadn't seen any hype either.

I'm planning on seeing Maid in Manhattan, Analyze That and Catch Me if You Can.

I go during the day with a friend whilst DD is at school - advantages are cheap seats and not having to pay a babysitter!

leese · 24/02/2003 18:44

Anyone seen The Pianist? I've been dying to see this for awhile, and now its won the 'Best Film' BAFTA, want to go more than ever.

LEWEI · 24/02/2003 21:11

Dp and i went to see Daredevil starring Ben Aflek,
not being one for super hero films i was very pleasently surprised, it was a great action movie a definate hit.

outofpractice · 09/05/2003 10:34

I saw Catch Me If You Can on a plane and I fell asleep just at the end. Please will someone tell me what happened? I watched it until the bit where he gets arrested on Xmas Day in that factory by the FBI man.
