Please Help - We Have A Mouse.......

Please advise if you have experience of this, i'm tearing my hair out!!
Starting a coupl of months ago we very occasionally heard a scuttling noise, assumed it might be a mouse but checked for signs and there were none so thought it must be in the wall somwhere. Didn't do anything as we weren't sure and it definitely did not seem to be coming into the house itself.
Then a week ago found droppings in three sperate areas on each floor - so its now in. Eeeek!!
The next day noticed a horible musty ammonia smell which has stayed since. Checking every morning for droppings and there has been some new ones twice.
On thursday evening for about 3 hours and very suddenl the smell got very very strong then next morning back to the usual level.
I assume its just one mouse as there are not many droppings and we really dont hear anything at all. It has no access to the food and we are very careful about crumbs etc so cant see what it is living on.

So, could it be that its not actually "living" in the house, just popping in?
We put poison down the day I first found the droppings but will it definitely eat the poison?
And if it does, would it need to be here more often than it seems to be for the poison to work (it has a cumulative(sp) effect)?
And is it wishful thinking to think its only the one and that it doesnt really live here?
Honesty appreciated.

Ammonia? Are you sure it's not a bat?

NadineBaggott · 25/08/2007 14:29

We live in a rural area so we have had mice - poison worked a treat for us! I forget what it was called but little blue pellets in a white tray - you can see they've been eating the stuff!

Hannie55 · 25/08/2007 14:29

My nerves cant take it...dont say such things!!

I'm sure I would notice a bat tbh. Lol!!!

Or you could set up a humane trap and then keep it as a little pet, call it George.

Hannie55 · 25/08/2007 14:31

We are using Rentokil Rodeine. Bluey/green in white tray but honestly Its been down a week and cant see a difference in the amount.

NadineBaggott · 25/08/2007 14:37

I think ours was Rentokil - in a red box?

Have you tried moving them about?

Hannie55 · 25/08/2007 14:40

There are many many things I could call the little shit. George is NOT one of them!

So should I have seen a difference in the poison trays by now?

I knew it!! Its just going to keep coming in, stinking out my house, shitting all over the place and not having the common decency to eat the poison I have so thoughtfully provided

Hannie55 · 25/08/2007 14:40

Yes NB, have put them in various places.

we have had them on and off for the last couple of years.i hate to say it, but there is never just one.
i HATE the bloody things.we have had pest control in a few times.but we live in a old terrace house and they run under one house to the other.our neighbour has seen them and thinks they are cute.
ive found the mouse and rat poison from wilkinsons is the only one that seems to kill them.its in a red packet.good luck

littlerach · 25/08/2007 17:13

I don't think you ever get just one mouse!!

We have them every so often, we live by a field which doesn't ehlp.

We used poison form B&Q whch was for all rodents. It took about a week until any went, then we kept refilling uintil no mmore went. Think it was 3 days. Never found a body or smelt it.

If there is somehting else they could be eating then I guess they won't eat the poison, so amke sure there's nothing left out. DH tried putting a broken biscuit leading tio the poison but that didn't work.

My neighbour used the sonic plug in thing sanfd they got rid of their mioce. That's when they came into ours I htink

BonyM · 25/08/2007 17:46

We've had them on and off but I'm a big softy and won't put poison down. We use a humane trap and bait it with chocolate which they seem to love.

We found droppings a few months back and managed to catch 7 mice over a period of a few days. We've not had any since, but we have an old house so am assuming they'll be back at some point!

denbury · 25/08/2007 17:47

try traps with chocolate in them. mice love chocolate. it worked a treat when we had them

frazzledazzle · 25/08/2007 18:06

Put some peanut butter on some bread and put it on a trap,it worked for us.

ruty · 25/08/2007 18:11

when we had mice we got a cat. She was like Terminator. Within 2 weeks [every night a decapitated mouse on the kitchen floor] they'd all gone and never returned. she caught quite a few tho. She's retired to a friend's posh house in the country now, as we moved to a flat.

choufleur · 25/08/2007 19:10

One of my cats is a real mouser but he tends to bring them back to the house to 'play' with. makes me love him all the more . Does your local council do any sort of rodent control?

Posey · 25/08/2007 19:14

When we had them I called in Rentokil for advice. He said borrow a cat for the weekend or better still get one. We did, he saught one only but I think the smell of cat put the mice off our place.
We have since lent our cat to a couple of friends and he works a treat

Posey · 25/08/2007 19:15

He caught not saught

Hannie55 · 26/08/2007 09:13

Thank you everyone for your advice so far!
Good news - I think one of the trays of bait looks like it has definitely gone down this morning so fingers crossed it/they are eating it.
I wish I could get a cat but I am horribly allergic to them!
And i'm glad to hear the sonic plugs are meant to work as we have some of those also, we were told to let the poison work then use the plugs to deter any further mice from coming in.

OK, so poison has been down for 11 days now but i definitely heard mousery going on last night.

Shouldn't they be dead by now?

please someone tell me what to do!!!

MyTwopenceworth · 27/08/2007 20:51

I had one recently.

I was advised to buy this

MyTwopenceworth · 27/08/2007 20:52

I didn't get it, as it happens.

I fed it, named it, tried to trap it and eventually dh clubbed it over the head with a shoe.

But I would have bought one of those!
