Could you lure them outside with some over-ripe fruit?

twogorgeousboys · 25/09/2004 14:13

This might help:

Fill a bowl with

half pint warm water (to dossolve other ingredients)

2 tbspns sugar

2 tbspns vinegar (pref white)

couple of drops of washing up liquid

If there's loads, place a couple of bowls near the infestation area. They SHOULD be attracted to it and get stuck in the water.

Other ideas (just been looking on the internet - can you tell i am bored!!)

Fill some bottles with over ripe fruit, or what ever seems to be attracting them. Put some rolled up paper, like a funnel in the neck of the bottle. They will fly in but not be-able to get out again.

Make sure there is nothing else left around that they will be attracted to. You need to find the source of where they are coming from, and sometimes that isn't easy as they can feed in drains etc (Yuk!!)

I had this last summer and couldnt understand where they were coming from - anyway after a few days i decided to clean out every single kitchen cupboard. Opened one and found some rotten vegetables and about a million fruit flys !! YUCK! Anyway as soon as i had removed the veg within a day the remaining flys would fly up to the window where i would swat them. I would check your WHOLE kitchen to make sure there is nothing you have missed

oh yuck what a dread !! My stomach just turned.

what's the difference between a fruit fly and an ordinary fly then?

Tessiebear · 25/09/2004 15:26

fruit flys are a lot smaller than ordinarly flys (about a quarter of the size) and they breed in rotting fruit, veg etc (i think that is right anyway)

Maybe dd has left an apple core or something in a hidey hole in the kitchen?

melsy, when i was doing my 're-search' on the internet for you about fruit fly, i noticed that you can pay someone to come and get rid of them for you - like pest control.
I think i read that they use some kind of electronic thing - though i may have dreamt it!!!
Depends on how bad it is, if you can afford it etc. Maybe your local council pest control dept. could lead you in the right direction?
