You need a proper grate with a fire brick at the back otherwise the whole thing might catch fire. You can find firepace fitters in the yellow pages and give one a call, they will come and look at it for you.

Twiglett, when was your house built? It's possible that the fireplaces were originallly coal burning ones and converted along the was to gas ones. In that case all you need to do is sweep the chimneys (and double check what's happening at the roof level ...ie chimney pot).
