School shoe dilemma

DD1 (4) looked over my shoulder while I was looking at school shoes online, and has set her heart on these 'shiny shoes'

I am not convinced, because I think they'd get scuffed pretty easily and look scruffy. She's never had patent shoes before though, so I'm not actually speaking from experience.

Are they suitable for school/everyday wear? Opinions please?

They'll last five minutes'. I cannot believe what dd1 did to her shoes last year.

I thought patent leather was meant to be tough?

clutteredup · 15/08/2007 09:39

go for the leather ones and shine them up so they look really shiny, but leather is going to last longer and with polishing will stay shiny for longer. i wouldn't even give patents 5 minutes if you're lucky they'll last till she's walked into the playground.
you can always say they look shinier on the computer, she might believe you.

The other thing is they don't look as though they have enough ankle support for a 4 yr old.

Gobbledigook · 15/08/2007 09:43

Agree, I don't think they look 'strong' or 'substantial' enough for school tbh.

Gobbledigook · 15/08/2007 09:43

I feel her pain though - I ADORED patent shoes as a child!!

melpomene · 15/08/2007 10:01

Thanks, that confirms what I thought. Might try clutterup's suggestion.

Of course, her second choice is these ones, which are twice the price of all the others

Patent leather shoes are pretty wearing and lots wear them at school. However those shoes are patent plastic which aren't very good for the feet to wear continously and won't last.

Fireflyfairy2 · 15/08/2007 11:53

They look like ballet pumps for wearing on occassions.

Not school shoes.

I wouldn't expect to get a lot of wear out of shoes that cost that & aren't leather. Do you get her feet measured?

My dd got these ones this year her choice

I wanted her to get these because they are velcro shut & not buckle like the ones above

LIZS · 15/08/2007 11:56

dd normally has that 2nd pair ff2. melpomene your 2nd pair are similar to ones Startrite did last year and dd loved hers. First ones don't seem very substantial tbh, do they have to wear them outside to play ?

melpomene · 15/08/2007 13:15

Fireflyfairy, I agree they look like party shoes. They are listed in the 'school shoes' section, though.

They are mainly for wearing in the playground and on the journey to school, because they wear plimsolls indoors at school.

The startrite ones are nice but I had really hoped not to spend more than £25 or so.

Maybe these ones would be OK; they are 100% leather and scuff resistant.
