Shall I bother going to A&E?

Just fell down the wooden stairs and am pretty sure I've broken my toe, its swollen massively and hurts like hell... But is there any point in sitting in A&E for 4 hours with a 9mo just for them to say, yep you broke it idiot, have some paaracetamol as you are still breastfeeding?
Or are you supposed to get these things checked out?! My dp is on at me to go (how I'm supposed to drive there I'm unsure...!) but I don;t think its worth it??

they don't do much for toes afair (have broken 8 of mine!) they don't even strapthem up nowadays. elevate it, put a bag of peas on and take lots of paracetamol.

Is it still toe shaped, as in not bent in a way it shouldn't be?

harleyd · 14/08/2007 10:46

i broke the ame 2 toes twice this year. the first time round i sat in a&e for 4 hours just for them to tape the toes together and give me painkillers. the 2nd time round i just taped them together myself

MerlinsBeard · 14/08/2007 10:47

and whch toe? if its your big you need to go-something about balance

harleyd · 14/08/2007 10:47

btw, i know how sore it is, sympathies

i dropped a glass plate on my toe at the weekend - it hurts like hell, cant bend it dont know if its broke but i'm on the same wave length as you, i dont see the point in sitting in A&E.

Sorry that probably doesnt help much!

see here

Also, apparently if not properly splinted you may need later surgery to fix.

TootyFrooty · 14/08/2007 10:49

How about going to see a nurse/nurse practitioner at your GP's surgery. They'll strap you up well and you won't have to waste half your life waiting.

SlightlyMadSpider · 14/08/2007 10:50

If you want to go anywhere go to GP if it easier. I don't think they even bother XRAying them as long as they are straight (GP will be able to check that).

When I was in a similar position (except I was preg so knew they wouldn't XRay) I was told that the only way they tell is if it is still painful after a period of time (3wks I think) it was prob broken. If not it was not.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 14/08/2007 10:50

I did mine at Christmas, I walked around on it for weeks. I strapped it myself to no real avail, they strapped it and it was as right as rain in days.

lulalullabye · 14/08/2007 10:51

If its your big toe, go. If its any other toe, strap it to the next with a little bit of tissue in between. will be painful but will heal.

Excellent! Just saved myself a trip to A&E!! Cheers ladies, will attempt to explain to dp, 'the ladies on mumsnet say....' he's heard it before so may be prepared for an arguement.
It's not bent or anything, just hurts like hell! Might go to doc's of it gets ridiculous but driving isn't appealing right now.
Cheers for advice, off to find chocolate and paracetamol, I deserve them
