I cant find anyone who would tech me. I was even contemplating going in the knitting shop and asking if they will teach me!

It's quite easy- once they show you how to cast on, knit, purl, cast off, reduce and increase you can get a lot of knitting done. Stick to simple patterns at first adn you're away... Ask at your local knitting shop or if you have older neighbours etc- I can't explain how to do it because you need to see it . Good luck

woodpops · 22/09/2004 15:26

Snap, wouldn't have a clue where to start though!!! ELC are even doing a knitting kit for 5 year olds plus. I considered buying that. How sad am I????

eefs · 22/09/2004 15:29

around the tree, into the burrow and...
I forget too

fio2 · 22/09/2004 15:29

oh glad its not just me. I know how to do straight knitting and pearl knitting. I have forgotten how to cast on and off though! I was taught to crochet as a child and I have forgotten how to do it

fio, knitting as many Mners will tell you is and has been the new rock n roll for some time. do CAT me if you'd like some patterns to inspire....or crocheting. the lovely ladies in johnny lou lou's knitting dept will show you how if you get stuck & live near one..

fio2 · 22/09/2004 15:38

oh bundle i would LOVE some patterns! I will CAT you!

Marina · 22/09/2004 15:41

fio, do it. No blushes please. Knitting is wonderful - creative and therapeutic (plus if you are knitting and watching TV you can't also scoff crisps at the same time - or I can't anyway).

Are you still in Kent? Bluewater John Lewis is one of their stores that hosts workshops including "getting started" events.

Or perhaps Bundle, Tamum and I should host a Mumsnetters' Casting-Off type event...honestly, it is easy to get started again if you already have the basics.

Bundle, how are you doing on the Dumplings? I'm about to start dd's having hacked my way through a Lucky on the train.

eefs · 22/09/2004 15:43

bundle - I can still crochet - do you have patterns?

littlemissbossy · 22/09/2004 15:47

fio, i've done a google search for knitting classes for you ... but only come up with a class on a Wednesday at Age Concern

how old are you?

sweetkitty · 22/09/2004 15:51

oh forgot I can knit as well, I can cast off too.

I want to do a cross stitch for DD (think I'm getting old)!

Dingle · 22/09/2004 15:52

Shame your not a bit closer FIo, I'd teach you!!
I have a loft full of wool too in fact behind the wool somewhere there lurks a....knitting machine.

bundle · 22/09/2004 15:56

eefs, yes, what would you like? CAT me for your crocheting needs (though only have one book and it's for youngish kids)
marina - the dumpling is completed! and it's lovely. there is one rather long twisted stitch but you can't see it if you squint, and she's already pulled another stitch in the park so i can't be too precious about it. she looks so adorable in it - will take pic and scan, must try to remember. now to start dd1's - it's not a dumpling but v similar with a set-in sleeve in the slightly more grown up Rowan kids book.
(which is the lucky btw, is it one of the rowan cotton ones??)

motherinferior · 22/09/2004 15:57

I just need to find a decent woolshop!!

TraceyP · 22/09/2004 16:00

Fio - I have a book which teaches you how to knit if you'd like it? I had to learn for a play I was in once, I was certainly able to learn the basics from it although I didn't get very far into it as knitting's not my thing. If you'd like it you can cat me and I'll post it to you.

fio2 · 22/09/2004 16:13

oh tracey i would love the book, i would pay you for it if you like!

Yes Marina I am still in Kent, takes me about an hour to get to Bluewater though, wish Kent wasnt such a big county! Mind you if they have the courses on a saturday that would be fine as dh could have the kids for me I will ring and see when they are, thanks

Dingle you are not that far from me are you?

littlemissbossy I am 26 but there is a very high elderly population here. Maybe if I advertised in the newsagents window someone might adopt me!

I love the idea of a mumsnet knit-a-thon

i blame my new bag from that bloody knitwear shop in Whitstable for starting all this. It is so basic but so appealing

Marina · 22/09/2004 16:18

The workshops vary in timings Fio but I think they have some at the weekends. I think it is well worth asking in the woolshop if someone is around to teach you the basics, though!
MI, I either go to John Lewis or shop online from Kangaroo in Lewes - very good, friendly stockists. I have not found a decent woolshop anywhere in SE london.
Lucky is that simple moss-stitch All Seasons Cotton cardy in Pipsqueaks, Bundle. I did wonder about little fingers and Dumpling

fio2 · 22/09/2004 16:20

there was a wonderful wool shop in Broadstairs today but it was mega busy!

OP posts:
TraceyP · 22/09/2004 16:20

Fio, you're welcome to the book just for the postage - cat me your address and I'll stick it in the post for you.

Dingle · 22/09/2004 16:21

Fio, I'm in Medway, 5 mins from J3 of M2!!
What this bag like? Have several pattern for bags, made quite a few personalised for kiddies presents, larger versions for their Mummys!
Got to venture up in the loft soon to get some wool for ponchos and scarves.Sad life I leadif it isn't dd's salt work it's cardmaking or knitting. But then I am getting on a bit now.

fio2 · 22/09/2004 16:24

I am 40 mins from the medway! so not that far, we will have to have a mini meet up and talk wool

Tracey i will cat you!

The bag is black wool, a nice small rectangle with lots of little black and burgundy balls hanging off the bottom. It is a shoulder bag that you can wear accross yourself iykwim!

Dingle · 22/09/2004 16:26

What's a wool shop??
They are a dying breed aren't they?

Have a very little local shop, but it only stocks very basic wools. I don't get there much but I believe there is a fairly good one in Rochester(Francis Isles) they used to stock a lot of Rowan patterns & wool. I believe the do mail order now. I still use my stocks of wool from years ago, but if I need to buy anything-it has to be mail order.

bundle · 22/09/2004 16:27

stitch n bitch, with a bottle of red

fio2 · 22/09/2004 16:32

lol bundle

i have a wool shop round the corner! mind you as I said before we have a high elderly population so maybe thats why!
