What is a troll?

Just have this picture in my head of those plastic toys with frizzy hair, but I've seen a few refs to 'trolls' on a few posts recently.

Sorry if I'm being a numpty but what is meant by a troll? (Only because where I live it's a term for a not-very-attractive woman!).

[puzzled]

it's a name for a person who deliberately posts offensive or inflammatory messages in order to get a reaction.

LouBeeLou · 22/09/2004 13:23

Ah, I get it! Doh! Thanks Tissy x

In that case my FIL is a troll (in RL not on MN).

Glad I'm not the only one who didn't know, just asked this on another thread.

What's a numpty?

[very puzzled]

woodpops · 22/09/2004 14:09

A numpty's someone stupid ............. isn't it?? THat's what I'd always been led to believe.

MrsDoolittle · 22/09/2004 14:30

My dh laughed when I called him a numpty. he didn't know what it meant either.
I used it to make a change from calling him a muppet

Momof2 · 22/09/2004 14:32

Numpty, LOL that's usually what I call DP when he's p'ing me off. Thought it was a west country term of abuse as not heard of it before I moved here.

LouBeeLou · 22/09/2004 17:06

Yes, numpty is a stupid person.

Like me most of the time!
