Aloha/ Pam T, we did the sliced up Mars bar too!! Watching old Gene Kelly/ Doris Day/ Cary Grant(swoon) movies!

Also, first crush definitely Starskey, posters from Jackie all over my (purple) walls!

John Noakes and Shep my all time favourite presenters.

Had a ssquirmel too! Sadly squirmed its way into a cup of tea! Was never the same after that!!!

If you've no idea what I'm on about, check out the last few days on the Child of our time thread!

My guilty secret is that I rather liked the Eighties.

aloha · 30/08/2002 23:27

Demos, Demob, Zanzibar, Fred's, Brandy Alexanders, matt black everything.. the lot. Also, everyone I ever slept with (not many, honest) had one of those black and grey geometric duvet covers with red lines in. Were they issued by the government to all single men between the ages of 20 and 30 between 1982 and 1987?

bossykate · 30/08/2002 23:35

aloha, don't take this the wrong way, but i'm glad you're slightly older than i, it makes me feel marginally less sad that i spent the time you're talking about in adolescent sulks in my bedroom reading about these clubs (i.e. was not old/brave enough to go!)... and listening to the smiths of course!

Azzie · 31/08/2002 06:54

aloha, one of the things my dh brought with him when we moved in together was the black and grey duvet cover with red lines on it. As I type our friend's 8 y.o. son is asleep under it in our guest bedroom...maybe I should dispose of it now before I infect another generation of young men?

We always jokingly called it 'the double decker bus song', but my favourite Smiths song ever is There is a Light that Never Goes Out.

bettys · 31/08/2002 09:24

Thanks Jodee, it was the Wag Club, then Harrys behind Carnaby St for a bacon butty and the night bus back to SE London. Had a lot more stamina in those days, those I suppose I'm still up in the night sometimes...

I forgot Harry's Bar! Yes, a big fry up and a mug of tea. Mmm! How useful all that energy would be now.

That Bianca Jagger got about a bit didn't she - I also used to go to the Embassy Club (Bond Street?) and saw her there with Liza Minelli and Andy Warhol. Best sighting was Bryan Ferry in a pink leather suit.
ks, no the Smiths were not only a northern thing, they were also a southern thing and a student thing - it was their first album with the naked picture of Joe D'Alessandro on the cover that we played over and over again.
All us mumsnetters were so trendy weren't we - I don't know about the rest of you but I'm not now!

ionesmum · 31/08/2002 18:44

Oh I adore The Smiths! Jodee, I love There is a Light and it Never Goes Out too, and Reel Around the Fountain and Bigmouth Strikes Again. My favourite in How Soon is Now, dh bought me their Greatest Hits vol. 1 when we were on honeymoon in the Cotswolds and it reminds me so much of one of the best pre-dd weeks of my life.

I do think Morrissey is having a massive laugh, in that sense he reminds me of Jarvis Cocker.

aloha · 31/08/2002 18:56

I think this thread is having a bad effect on me. I actually went and cut up a dress to make a skirt today a la my student days, and then threw a massive strop because I could only find one of my pair of LK Bennett heels, and I didn't want to wear my mumsy flip flops again. Am I regressing??

ionesmum · 31/08/2002 20:05

Oh excellent. Perhaps I should go and sew two bits of material together to make a top, borrow dh's jeans and pretend to be Bananarama. (before S A & W got hold of them of course.) I would do my Siousie Sioux make-up but I don't posess black eye pencils any more and I don't want to scare dd.

bossykate · 31/08/2002 21:21

you don't have to make your own stuff - 80s stuff is really back in fashion, batwing sleeves and all! although i think they have decided not to revive the rara skirt...

jenny2998 · 31/08/2002 22:24

Arggggggggghhhhhhhhhh, nooooooooo please I HATED the eighties. Bad music, bad clothes, nasty, nasty, nasty (and I was only 10 when we moved into the 90's! ) But please don't make me relive the horror...

musica · 31/08/2002 22:32

I was SO into Wham when I was a kid - I was totally devastated when they split up and had an "I love George Michael" sticker on my mirror at home. Once they split, I had to move on to superior bands such as A-Ha, and then Bros. Funny, I thought you were supposed to develop better taste as you got older...

Jenny, I've got to disagree with you, the 80s were my favourite years, probably because I was a teenager then and starting to do my own thing. The music was fab and there was such a wide range of clothes throughout the decade. But as someone has already said, I'm a mature lady now and a bit older then you. I also love 60s music and the image that we are given of the 60s in general looks great but I'm sure the reality wasn't quite like that.

CAM · 01/09/2002 12:52

Oh yes ks I thought all their songs were northern, but my best friend at university was from Manchester so he explained all the references to me!

bettys · 01/09/2002 16:51

I wasn't that into The Smiths but sometimes (masochistically) I do miss a good northern winter. I tell my southern partner about waking up to frost on the windows & he thinks I'm mad. And I'm sure you used to only be able to buy pikelets (crumpets) in winter.

Hang on... I've still got a flat cap somewhere. They had a fashion moment in the 70's.

Rhubarb · 02/09/2002 16:37

Was no-one a punk then? Sex Pistols? The Clash? Personally if I manage the Christmas get-together I think dressing up as punk is a definite must! I missed out first time round so now's my chance!

batey · 02/09/2002 18:06

O.K. if you go as a punk, maybe I'll get my goth gear out!!? We can be the weirdos in the corner!!
