Try local library? Church run a mother group? Baby clinic notice board?
TBH the HV should have a list of local groups etc. When I moved to where we are now with a five week old baby and 2 older ones, my HV gave me a sheet with contact details for playgroups, mother and toddler groups, etc. Your HV sounds hopeless! Not much comfort to you I know but there must be places near you that she knows about.

mckenzie · 19/09/2004 21:30

scan your local paper for the diary column with mum and baby groups listed.
Visit your local library and look on the notice board.
Look on the notice board at the clinic when you go to get baby weighed.
Call you local NCT telephone number.
Ask at your local council office for their booklet about child services and activities.
Check the notice board at the local DIY shop.
Check your Thomson Local directory for details of baby groups.
and if you still find nothing then contact me directly and I will do some detective work for you.
And tell us where you live and I bet another mumsnetter will know some groups in your area.

Try netmums
lots of local information for mothers

Skate · 19/09/2004 21:31

Have you thought about tumbletots/gymbabes, Jabberjacks, Jo Jingles....

Not sure if these are all nationwide but I'm sure tumbletots is and you can go from 6 months.

You could ring your local authority to find out about playgroups in the area.

Does your local leisure centre have anything on? Ours does a 'playgroup' a few times a week.

Branster · 19/09/2004 21:33

where about do you live?
have a look at notice boards in local libraries and church halls for mother& toddler groups, music or other activity classes for young children. Local helath centre noticeboard might have some information too.

Local council website could well have a childcare link with a contact number and it's worths giving them a call to see if they can reccomend anywhere.

{http://www.thegrapevine.co.uk\Grapevine} is a magazine for parents of young children but I don't know if it covers your area.

{http://www.netmums.com\Netmums} is a very good on-line resource but again you'll have to check if they cover your area.

Lonelymum · 19/09/2004 21:34

If you take ds swimming anyway, how about starting a mother and baby swimming class (most pools seem to do them). That way you would meet other mums and find out what else they do in your area.

Branster · 19/09/2004 21:34

it only took me 2 mins to type all this and post crossed with all of you!

sweetkitty · 19/09/2004 21:34

I posted a similar message a few weeks ago, i asked our HV and she said I will be invited to a postnatal group next month (apparently we missed the last block) and then they hope you make your own groups and friends. not very helpful.

Lonelymum · 19/09/2004 21:36

Not immediately, sweetkitty, but the groups are very interesting and you are almost sure to amke friends. There is nothing like a shared experience (new baby) to draw people together.

mum2oliver · 19/09/2004 21:40

BRANSTER,Im confused with what you have put. Please explain. Are you angry.

Have found the following:

Mums & Tots Session 1.30-3.00
Highfield Primary School
Highfield Road, Kettering

Tel 01536 512649 (check day)

Parent & Toddler Group
North Park Pavilion
North Park, Kettering
Wednesdays 9-12

Tel 01536 534266 (to double check days, times)

You could also try the local NCT membership secretary - Sarah Wise 07005 801527 (apparently she covers Northamptonshire) so might be able to advise on stuff going on in Kettering.
