I have a non-MNer (yes, they do exist) friend who is considering moving to Oakville in Canada from UK. Her DH has been offered a job and they've chosen Oakville as it seems a nice place to live and bring up their two DDs.

What's the best/worst about living in Oakville? I promised my friend I'd ask you lot on her behalf!

Hi,My brother lives in Oakville and I have a friend who lives there, but as I have lived in uk now for 24 yrs I can't give you any advice.I will try and get some from them when I next speak to them.
As far as I remeber and from previous visits it's a nice twon albeit more of a sprawling suburb.Has shoreline on lake I think and some historical properties (over 100 yrs old).
I grew up in a twon not far away called Dundas which is really nice.

I'd be off like a shot.

I had a cousin living there. It's very suburban, you need a car to go anywhere. Not very diverse, I don't think, although it might have changed. I'd bet it's pretty safe and clean and all that.

Where will her DH be working?

Don't know about Oakville, but everyone I know who has lived in Canada LOVES it.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/08/2007 06:41

Ah, well, I lived in Canada for 25 years or something. I didn't like it that much. I go back home, and enjoy it for a bit, but then get annoyed.

NQC- totally agree ,grew up there, would never choose to live there again despite my family all living there.Much prefer it here.

Thanks for all your comments, but was hoping for specific info to Oakville to help my friend with some more info on what its like to actually live there. Not sure where her DH is going to be working, but I think my friend thought (from web research mostly) Oakville seemed the better place to live.

I think there are special forums just for expats, that will have more specific info.

I'd recommend visiting, and/or renting a house, before deciding where to live, tbh.

My first comments were specifically about Oakville, btw.
