Molten Plastic on Iron!!! Help!!!

I have one of these steam irons that sits on a tank of water. I left it to heat up, saying to DS1, DS2 and DH, that iron is on, heating up leave it alone (by implication to DH watch the kids don't go near it) when I came back into the room I could smell slight burning and it turns out one of the kids has knocked the iron onto the plastic part of the tank.

To cut a long story short the plastic has melted (I am rather shocked at this) all over the metal soleplate of the iron. It's a stainless steel soleplate no fancy non-stick coatings etc. Can anyone advise me how to get this off??? I used to have some iron cleaning stuff but of course hadn't used it for years so threw it out a few weeks ago, arrrrgh!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Will it peel/scrape off when it's cooled?

lakeland do some great hot iron cleaning cream, maybe that would shift it?

That was wondered pixiefish, scrape it off when it has cooled or heat it up until it melts again and wipe it off with something. I'll wait 'till it cools and give it a go.

I'll keep the cleaning cream in mind, I was really hoping to finish the ironing today so if it can be done without any special purchases then that would be best.
