I have never had a new mobile phone ever and we haved decided it is time I joined the adult world.

Dp has just bought a new phone on T mobile but it is pay as you go as he hardly ever uses his. Is there an advantage to be had in buying one on the same contract

My mum has said to get a contract phone as I am presently paying about £20 - £30 a month on pay as you go.

My requirements are:
it takes calls and lets me answer them

A radio would be good as I do not have a radio adaptor on my ipod. If I could plug the phone into my whiteboard at school just as I do my ipod I could also listed to r4 in my classroom as my digital never picks it up.

If it could work in the USA that would also be good as we are about to go and everyone elses phone works out there so if I get lost on the land of mickey mouse I could be found.

A decent camera as I love snapping dd out and about but don;t always have my digital or film camera with me.

A basic way of keeping track of appointments and important days as a back up to my diary which I loose at least once a month.

I have been recommended the Sony Ericsson K800i by a friend as she says it meets my requirements and having researched it online it look good.

If I get that one, or another if the verdict is that it is crap where is the best place to go, preferably online.

Try mobilephonesontheweb.com
Some of the deals which seem to good to be true are cashback deals which mean you pay more than they're saying at first and (if you jump through all the hoops) get it back later! If you're disciplined though, they've got some good deals.
I'm pleased with my Samsung d600 by the way.

(love the fact that you listen in the classroom!)

Radley · 24/07/2007 11:47

I have the sony ericsson w850i and love it. Best phone I've ever had.

I pay 25.00 per month and get £60.00 a month to spend on either text or phonecalls, so far I've NEVER gone over.

twinsetandpearls · 24/07/2007 11:47

carphone warehouse have the Sony Ericsson K810i which seems to be the same spec, is just a newer version

Sorry, I meant U600!

DebitheScot · 24/07/2007 11:49

I have a nokia 6330 which does all the things you want it to. I upgrade every year and every year i think I'll get something other than a nokia but every time end up with a nokia. They are meant to be one of the best phones around. I was assured by the guy on the shop (obviously he could be biased) that that Nokia is better than the Sony Ericssons.

twinsetandpearls · 24/07/2007 11:49

radley with the radio is there a socket for me to plug in my speakers?

OP posts:
babygrand · 24/07/2007 11:50

Very funny - I take it you turn it off for Inspections?

chopster · 24/07/2007 11:50

yep get that one. Sony phones are brilliant, never had a problem with them. I've managed to smash mine though, but instead I'm using a 5 year old sony which is still going strong. carphone warehouse are ok. Stay away from one stop phoneshop - dp had to sue them to get his cashback.

DebitheScot · 24/07/2007 11:50

oops, its a 6300, not 6330.

babygrand · 24/07/2007 11:51

Yeah, they come with speakers if they've got radio attached. (Might be a different socket from your other speakers.)

chopster · 24/07/2007 11:51

Noooo, sony really are the best. I've had all sorts, get a new one at least once a year on contracts, and nokias normally screw up.

Radley · 24/07/2007 11:52

Not sure to be honest, but, with the volume that it goes up to I find that I don't need the speakers.

twinsetandpearls · 24/07/2007 11:53

I would use the camera for snapshots to put on dd blogg mainly, could a 2mp camera do that?

I have an SLR as my main camera and sometimes and it is too big to carry around just in case so wanted a reasonable camera phone.

The u600 has a 3.2mp camera too - although the delay is really annoying!

twinsetandpearls · 24/07/2007 11:55

twinsetandpearls · 24/07/2007 11:57

are the buttons on the U600 not fiddly?

OP posts:
babygrand · 24/07/2007 11:59

I find them OK, but some people do say that. You really need to go into a shop and look at some phones even if you buy it on the web in the end. I had a couple of phones in mind but when I saw them 'in the flesh' changed my mind. Go and have a look in the shops, but don't be drawn in as they don't have the best deals.

twinsetandpearls · 24/07/2007 12:05

I think I will get the sony ericcson one as my sister has it and I find it easy to use.

Now for contracts!

chopster thanks for mentioning cashback, it has reminded me to chase Carphone Warehouse about mine as it hasn't gone into my account yet.

Apart from this issue though I have always been happy with Carphone warehouse, I find them fairly impartial.

DebitheScot · 24/07/2007 12:09

If you'll be phoning your dh's mobile on your moblie then you'd be best on same network as him.
