Im about to book my wedding for next year It will be in September.

For the meal I want Mince and Dumplings followed by Sticky Toffee Pudding (no starter as its so stodgy) as I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this meal - it is also turning out to be a handy way to cut some costs.

What do you think? Will it be quirky and cool or resemble a school dinner?

mushy pea canapes?!

bundle · 15/09/2004 14:19

there's actually a samosa-type thing which Maltese people eat (the other variety has ricotta in it) which contains mushy peas... you have to be northern i suppose.

popsycal · 15/09/2004 19:21

NEVER HEARD OF MINCE AND DUMPLINGS?!?!!?
Obviously you don't live where its at ladies

Becca - as you know, we had cheap pasta and pizza at a cheap and cheeful italian restaurant. Everyone got the earlybird £4.50 three course menu and everyone commented on how friendly and relaxed because it wasn't 'faffy'. Freddiecat was there..where are you Freddie!!

I love mince and dumpling and sticky toffee pudding and most of the people I know (and the ones I have met that you know) would love it too!

How about a veggie shepherd pie type thing for veggies? Without the meat obviously....or a veggie stew with dumplings.....my mam makes a lush one of those with loads of lentils and split peas in. Yum!

Go for it girl!
Us northerners can take our 'stodge'!

Rowlers · 15/09/2004 19:30

Sounds great to me. Friends who got married a couple of years ago did sausage and mash. Sounds great and would have been except for the instant "smash" potato. Yukeroonie..... There were huge piles of it on EVERYONE's plate at the end of the meal. Still, no one had the cheek to complain. Sausages were nice.

Gorgeous idea and it is very fashionable to get back to our culinary routes. For all those who dissaprove just change the name, can't think now, you know jus instead of gravy, etc. Also one dumpling sitting on top of a gently poured sauce with a chive bouquet looks devine
Congratulations by the way and i do think it should be a day of all your favourite things

ladywallopofcod · 15/09/2004 19:37

i want her and dp to learn a ballroo m dance number secretly

fairyfly · 15/09/2004 19:39

roots
obviously
culinary route is probably a service station

lou33 · 15/09/2004 19:42

Dandelion and burdock? I love dumplings.

Blu · 15/09/2004 19:43

Stottie cakes.

Lonelymum · 15/09/2004 19:45

Would it be possible to have this option and another (lighter) one for those who want it or would this make the costs too much? Also, what sort of a wedding are you having? If it is very informal, the meal would suit.

motherinferior · 15/09/2004 19:48

Veg shepherds pie, incidentally, very good idea.

I really like the idea of having your favourite meal, dammit.

Slinky · 15/09/2004 19:49

I wouldn't be that keen TBH - myself not being a fan of "stew and dumplings" type thing. Also not a fan of "stodgy" puddings - but having said that, I'm not invited to your wedding so have what you like

I went to a wedding in February and it snowed. We were absolutely freezing and would have probably welcomed a huge bowl of stew

Flip · 15/09/2004 20:10

I'm a Northerner and at my Wedding we had home made (by my gran) Lancashire Hotpot. Along with loads of proper mushy peas, not the crap out of cans. I had a 150 guests and half a dozen huge catering pans of the stuff. People were coming back for seconds and thirds and by the end of the night there wasn't a drop left. So I'm with you Becca, go for what you want and send me an invite. I'll eat it especially accompanied by a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale!

whizzz · 15/09/2004 20:14

I think you should have a pretty good idea of what you, your family & friends would like. If thats your fave - go for it ! You could always have smaller portions if you're worried about the stodge ! The most improtant thing is that you (& hubby !) enjoy it !! Congrats by the way !

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 20:15

Oooooooo thanks latest posters you have made me feel alot better about it!!

The wedding will be here - its the lord mayor of Newcastle official residence - very cosy inside.

The room for the ceremony is the library and seating is all quite relaxed and Im hoping for a general relaxed and fun feeling throughout the whole day.

Who thinks it would all fit better in October? I think that is what I will do

The sweets have got to be Black Bullets, surely ??

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 20:21

Also meant to add the venue is in Jesmond which is where I was born and brought up when I was little and also where my dear late Granda lived so I like the idea of being close to my roots and having it all cosy and lovely

Can you see what Im trying to conjure up here

whizzz · 15/09/2004 20:22

Not connected to the thread but when I just read your name Soothepoo, I read it as Soothe Poo & thought to myself...well thats a strange one ! I take it you are Soo The Poo ????

marthamoo · 15/09/2004 20:31

You're never going to please all of the people all of the time - some will secretly (I hope secretly!) turn up their nose at your dumplings and STP, as would some if it was a confit of African Yak toes with shredded artichoke rosti and a jellied eel jus on the side.

You have what YOU want (it sounds yummy to me) but have a lighter/veggie alternative too.

CountessDracula · 15/09/2004 20:33

Becca have not read all replies so sorry if I;m repeating what others have said

This would be too stodgy for me personally. And what is mince? I mean how is it cooked? All sounds a bit grey and flabby

Sorry

Ailsa · 15/09/2004 21:39

As a fellow northerner I'd say go for it. My wedding was done on the cheap. We hired the upstairs room of a pub in Ponteland for the afternoon reception, had a buffet, everyone paid for their own drinks except for the Asti we had for the toast - dh's family don't like champers. For the evening 'do', those that wanted to joined us for a pub crawl round Newcastle.

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 21:40

Im just along the road from Ponteland which pub was it?

Im barred from the seven stars lol dont ask!

The Diamond - got married at the Methodist church over the road.

Whenever I come up north, I forget how small Pont (as the locals call it) is.

cab · 15/09/2004 22:09

Sounds good to me - though my favourite meal just now is chicken and asparagus stew with dumplings (Tesco's finest)- yum. With incredibly naughty dauphinoise spuds and minted peas.
You've got to have ice cream with the stp!

Beccarollover · 16/09/2004 17:19

Ive booked the wedding

October 15th 2005

Will be nice and cold for everyone to lap up the mince
