What is the MN consensus on this?

Im about to book my wedding for next year It will be in September.

For the meal I want Mince and Dumplings followed by Sticky Toffee Pudding (no starter as its so stodgy) as I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this meal - it is also turning out to be a handy way to cut some costs.

What do you think? Will it be quirky and cool or resemble a school dinner?

it's cool, you should have the food YOU want on your day!

ladywallopofcod · 15/09/2004 11:46

HMm
I ma not sure br

jolou1 · 15/09/2004 11:48

As long as the mince isn't grey and the dumplings aren't rock hard! I'm sure the caterers could make them look lovely!

Kayleigh · 15/09/2004 11:48

Love the pudding, not so keen on the main course.

motherinferior · 15/09/2004 11:50

Personally I wouldn't like it but it's your wedding!

beansmum · 15/09/2004 11:51

it might be a bit summery for such a heavy meal? go with what you want though, its your day.

My parents had pork pies and salad at their wedding and are having the same at their 25th anniversary this year. not my idea of celebration food though!

Blu · 15/09/2004 11:51

Dumplings followed by STP is a bit stodgy, isn't it? Especially if it is a warm September. Could you add an alternative to one of the courses - say ice cream or sorbet or fruit for pud or a salad or fish for main? Or does that dilute your idea / statment too much?

bluesky · 15/09/2004 11:51

Didnt Kate Winslet have something similar at first wedding, in the pub, sausages/mash and then sticky toffee? Luvverly!

ladywallopofcod · 15/09/2004 11:54

it not your day thought!( wicked cackle)

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 11:54

hmmm its really tricky - it could either be great or terrible couldnt it!

I was originally having a winter wedding which would have fitted in much better but the venue has really nice grounds and I wanted to try and get some use out of them so moved it to september

hmmmmmm

decisions decisions

Sounds great, it's your day so you choose the food. It wouldn't be my first choice admittedly, but it's all part and parcel of personalising your day, and not ending up with a 'rent a wedding', to borrow a phrase from another MNer

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 11:54

Also, the stodginess issue - would be awful if i got big distended tummy in my gown lol

Those who dont like the idea of it - would you end up just not touching it and going hungry? Would hate that to happen

Maybe its a northern thing but thought everyone loved Mince and Dumplings - its a real comforting, homely food for me !

shepherds/cottage pie might be a little lighter - a la Jeffrey Archer shepherds pie/champagne parties! we had stewy things (october) - one chicken and winey and one beef, all with rice. it was lovely, in a national trust property in london.

fio2 · 15/09/2004 11:59

do it becca, you know you want to

swill down with newcastle brown ale

puuuuuuurfec

Miaou · 15/09/2004 11:59

I think it would certainly be a meal to remember - very different!!

If it didn't affect the costs too much, I would put in a few "light" extras - perhaps a dish of salad for each table, sorbet/ice cream as suggested before.

I would say go for it but be prepared for some criticisms and consider whether that would affect you.

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 11:59

pmsl fio

Now thats an idea to replace champagne and canapes Newcastle Brown and Pork Scratchings

I can just see my Step Monsters face when a big dumpling is laid out in front of her! Oh she will be horrified

Would probably eat the mince but leave the dumplings. Really not keen on them. And would save myself for pudding !

Personally think shepherds pie may please more palates.

beansmum · 15/09/2004 12:00

i do like the food, love sticky tofee pudding, and would eat it but it just doesn't seem very weddingy to me. You can get that meal in pretty much every pub you go to.

Tinker · 15/09/2004 12:02

I went to a wedding this year that had similar - meat pies, potatoes and pickles. Went down VERY well. But this is Up North.

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 12:03

Thats my point beansmum - this is the type of food I enjoy and alot of people I socialise/my family etc - when in a restaurant I would always deviate towards something hearty and traditional than a soupson of something with a terrine of something else IYSWIM

Maybe shepherds pie would be better.............

My eyes light up whenever I see mince and dumplings on a menu but I suppose not everyone feels the same

Secur, thats not a bad idea as I was also thinking of hiring in HUGE games for the evening reception (connect 4, giant operation, jenga etc)

Do you think if this was a winter wedding as originally planned it would all fit in much better?
