Im about to book my wedding for next year It will be in September.

For the meal I want Mince and Dumplings followed by Sticky Toffee Pudding (no starter as its so stodgy) as I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this meal - it is also turning out to be a handy way to cut some costs.

What do you think? Will it be quirky and cool or resemble a school dinner?

I'm from Manchester orig and mince and dumplings never featured on my menu... It's quite a 'far northern' tradition isn't it ?

Becca I think is sounds delish. I used to be a wedding co-ordinator, and a few people did bangers and mash followed by bread and butter butting with custard. It was always the weddings with these type of menus that the guests commented o the most. All good comments ovb!

You'll need a vegi option though, and poss cheese for those who won't require the desert.

NomDePlume · 15/09/2004 12:16

I do think that if you were going for a winter wedding, the hearty menu would be much more appropriate.

I'm getting married next year too, and it is sooo difficult picking evreything. My best mate, keeps telling me to do what dp and I want and bugger everyone else so go with it, if its what you both want but don't forget us veggies!!!

My in laws to be have been to four weddings this year and had practically the same menu at every one, no one would ever accuse you of being boring.

SoupDragon · 15/09/2004 12:23

I wouldn't eat dumplings but would go for (say) shepherds pie. It's the dumplings I don't like. Give it a posh french name on the menu and no one will know

The veggie versio can be the same but made with quorn/soya mince can't it?

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 12:25

I might try and think of a veggie dish that would be equally appealing to non mince and dumpling meat eaters so people can go for that if they dont like it.

dreaming about sticky tofee pudding now! thats my dinner planned anyway.

the giant games sound fun, much better than just sitting about drinking

Sorry, not read all posts so excuse me if I repeat etc.

Personally I would worry about mince & dumplings. Dumplings only good if made very well, catering for loads of people I would worry they would come out like little rocks. I personaly wouldn't like it.

However i really like the idea of different meals at weddings.

D's brother got married in Brighton and we had a meal of fish n chips, mushy peas, slice of bread & butter. Table decorations were buckets of sand and windmills etc, place names were either sticks of roch with names through or pebbles from beach with name written in silver pen.

Another friend had reception on a canal barge at Little Venice in london and we had sausage, mash, onion gravy.

Someone else had a bbq, steak, burgers etc.

Another friend had a cold buffett

Prefered all these to the bit of dry chicken, uncrispy roast potaoes and hard indercooked carrots and a splattering of poease I can come to associate with wedding food.

Bibiboo · 15/09/2004 13:57

Personally, the further wedding meals deviate from roast meat and veg the better! I am a veggie, so luckily ususally get something a bit more unusual, but DH always gets the same old stodge. Not sure about mince and dumplings, sounds gross to be, but fully support your idea for a "different" menu!

Also, LOVED the post about the Brighton wedding with sand buckets and rock ... sounds v cool!

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 14:03

I think its a bout a 50/50 split

not sure i want half of the people at my wedding hating the food

bugger, bugger, bugger

what about fish (goujons more manageable for eating) n chips in a rolled up cone of brown paper for non-red meat people? individual shepherds pies look better/posher than a slop of it on your plate too.

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 14:10

what could i have as the traditional veggie option?

that could be the theme??

could have old fashioned sweets on table????

liking it.........

OP posts:
bundle · 15/09/2004 14:11

uncle joe's mintballs. humbugs (bah).
have to think about veggies...

Beccarollover · 15/09/2004 14:14

...this would tie in with idea of hiring giant games etc wouldnt it

The venue isnt insured for discoes and dancing so it was either stay there and do something different or move to somewhere else for party....

Traditional food, old fashioned sweets, games from childhood??

Whaddyathink?

I have to say that if I went to a wedding and that was the meal that was served I would be very dissapointed. I'm more of a "a soupson of something with a terrine of something else" kind of girl! I wouldn't say anything to the happy couple of course.

On the other hand I've never had (or even heard of) mince and dumplings, and I'm a Northerner. Maybe I'd love it.

bundle · 15/09/2004 14:17

canapes with mushy peas toppings? bottles of tizer(vimto if you want to be Northern or Irn Bru, Scottish) on tables?
