Move all the stuff you can upstairs.
Likewise with all your valuable.

Get stuff like all together
antibac
loo roll
bucket for anything you need with a lid
food
can opener
candles/torch.light source.
wet wipes
medicines/sanitary towels etc
blanket
Matches but stick in a tub first in case they get wet.
Waterproofs and changes of clothes.
Nappies if needed.
Water
Food

I am sure others will be able to contribute so please do so.

mobile phone and charger
phone book/yellow pages

Do you have to turn off your gas if you get flooded? Anything else apart from the obvious plugs etc.

only problem with having charger is that if you get flooded your electricity will go off so you won't be able to charge the phone.

one thing worth having is duck tape. My sil's house was flooded at the weekend, and her dh put duck tape over the bottoms of the doors to try and prevent the water coming in. And although it didn't prevent it as such, the water that came in was much cleaner, as if it had been filtered through the tape somehow. their neighbours' house was absolutely filthy because of the dirty water.

Cool box or bag.
Battery operated radio
Fully charged mobile (with credit)
Overnight bag in case you have to move out of your house.
If you bottle feed have some ready made cartons of formula as you may not have electric.

If you intend to stay in your house a camping stove maybe useful.

Please be aware that you shouldn't walk through flood water if at all possible as it can be contaminated.
If you have sickness etc upto 10 days after being in flood water then you should go to the doctors and tell them you have been in contact with flood water.

WingsofanAngel · 23/07/2007 13:21

You should turn gas and electric off if water enters the house.

also worth having a kettle that can be boiled on a gass hob/minni gass cooker. of course a saucepan will suffice for this if you don't have such a kettle.

if you're stock-piling food then cans is the way to go, because you can heat a tin of hotdog saucages/baked beans by simply putting the tin in boiling water for 5 minutes or so, and once you open it the sausages will be hot and you won't have unnecessarily dirtied a saucepan.

something to eat out of.

Didnt know if you got sick after about 10 days when walking through water to go to the docs. Very good point thanks

Be careful using tap water without first boiling it.

Toliets should have a sand bag placed on top of the seat to avoid any back flow.

WingsofanAngel · 23/07/2007 13:30

Make sure you have enough insurance and if you don't have any please get some.

jellyjelly · 23/07/2007 13:43

wingof i dont understand about the sandbag? Is this in between flushes and how will it stop stuff coming back?

They actually suggest you put one inside the toilet so that any sewage doesn't back fill therefore contaminating your bathroom with sewage.

www.townsville.qld.gov.au/wwwdocs/emergency/PreparingYourEmergencyKit.pdf

This is what we used when preparing for a hurricane Katrina style cyclone last year. It's very comprehensive as we had to be prepared to be roofless, powerless, waterless etc for several days. Always good to know that you have to get the camping gas cylinders filled as you purchase them empty (can you tell I didn't know )
