My sister was caught doing 88 in a 70mph (A1)-any idea how much her fine will be and I am guessing 3 points?

She is only 22 and worried sick about paying it.

The fine is the least of her worries - the hike in her insurance premiums will be much higher than the fine.

Bibis · 18/07/2007 19:11

£60 is the norm i think

pipsqueeke · 18/07/2007 19:13

3 +60, the insurance will go up next year as well thou it pretty much cancels out her NCB iirc.

JoMa · 18/07/2007 19:20

really? I got 3 points and my premium still came down

mosschops30 · 18/07/2007 19:21

3 points deffo. I got a £90 fine for doing 88 on a motorway.

sockmonkey · 18/07/2007 19:27

From what I recall in my insurance days, most companies aren't too bothered about your first speeding fine, it's when you have more than 3 points that they start to put premuims up.

cylonbabe · 18/07/2007 19:30

insurance will stay up for five years as well.
unless she is lucky enough that either the camer swas a dud, or no film/memory left in it.

Ladymuck · 18/07/2007 19:32

Most companies ignore an SP30. But I think if you are caught on a motorway it becomes an SP60 - and that they do factor in.

JoMa · 18/07/2007 19:34

I was on an A road, was doing 84 in a 70, got 3 points and £60 fine, and as far as I can tell it has never affected my insurance. it does make you more careful after though

Desiderata · 18/07/2007 19:36

Why the emoticon in your first post, ladymuck?

Speeding is an offence and rightly so. The law should set the fine at whatever it takes to stop someone re-offending.

Whooosh · 18/07/2007 19:42

Thank you all for your comments and yes it was an offence-she was rushing to the vet to see her dog for the last time having got back from uni-not excusing it at all.
It was one of those vans with cameras in so she reckons she was definitely caught.

But that does mitigate, Whooosh!

Most people would have done the same in the circumstances. Life is never cut and dried, is it?

Ladymuck · 18/07/2007 19:56

Des, becuase I was breaking the sad news that the fine isn't the financial penalty that you need to be worried about if you are 22.

JoMa, did you get an SP30 or an SP60? Big difference on the insurance!

Desiderata · 18/07/2007 20:11

Apologies, Lady. I took your comment out of context!

JoMa · 18/07/2007 20:25

SP30, as only an A road, not Motorway, but the A1 is also an A road, the A1M is the Motorway part

blahblahblahniks · 18/07/2007 20:29

Whoosh - I got a speeding ticket - 35 in a 30 zone in LABOUR and they still gave me three points and the £60 fine. Still slightly mad about that , but I have to say:

She's a tad lucky - at 90 they would have forced it into court and you can lose your licence. Depending on the are there is a difference between the speeds at which they give you a fixed penalty (which is an alternative to going to court) and pulling you up in front of the beak for it!

mylastrolo · 18/07/2007 20:53

i've to go pay my fine tomorrow 47 in a 30 they recently changed it and I hadn't noticed 3 pts and £60.00 was stressed out and had no sleep and didn't even see him it doesnt half slow you down it is so hard to do 30 going up a hill or is that just me

blahblahblahniks · 18/07/2007 21:01

If you stay in third it's easy.

PinkMartini · 18/07/2007 22:27

Have you asked Cod?
