Ive just completely scared myself stupid! I know Im going to sound really stupid, but I can still feel my heart pounding. I went to bed about 10:40. I was just lying there, watching my curtains going in and out as its quite windy, then I heard a door creak. Thought it was just the house making noises so ignored it, then I heard it again. It was coming from dd's room. Shes only 21 months and sleeps in a cot so knew it wasnt her and she was asleep. I lay still listening out for the noise and heard it again. To me it sounded like the wardrobe door opening. I predialled 999 on my mobile and had my thumb on the call button just in case. I looked around the room and realised I have nothing to defend myself with. I stood by my door looking into dd's room, and then realised it was just the bathroom door opening and closing due to the open window causing a draft.

But now its got me thinking. What if it was actually someone in the house? What would I do to protect me and dd? Im so freaked out now I cant sleep. Sound stupid dont I?

Why don't you get a burglar alarm? We set ours whilst in bed so that it is 'on' downstairs and 'off' upstairs...i.e. we can wander about upstairs but an intruder would only be able to get to us upstairs by first breaking in downstairs which would raise the alarm. Our alarm is soooooo extremely loud that it would be enough to send them scurrying off, and it would certainly rouse the neighbours!

earlygirl · 06/09/2004 23:29

we have dogs so i never need to worry about this-i can go out all day and leave the door open-just make sure your house is secure and get some window locks and check the windows dont open too far
i used to think worring about stuff like this was silly but its best to be cautious and feel safe
are you ok?

tammybear · 06/09/2004 23:31

Tammybear - you're not stupid. I can get myself in a right state when I'm on my own. Unbeknown to my neighbour I sleep with his telephone number at the ready on my mobile on my bedside table. (no point in telling him as the chances I would ever need to use it are incredibly slim!) Sounds paranoid but makes me feel better. Lavender is good for sleep and calming the nerves. You are statistically so much safer in your own home than, for example, in you car, so please try not to worry.

earlygirl · 07/09/2004 00:17

tammybear are you feeling better ?

krocket · 07/09/2004 07:53

poor you tammybear. agree about window locks and burglar alarms though, we always put ours on at night after we were broken into at night. Not meaning to scare you at all but worth thinking about.

nikcola · 07/09/2004 09:00

hi tammy hope you are ok now,
me and dd are often on own own and i get scared too every little noise i hear makes me scared, i sleep with 2 phones next to me, your not stupid tammy, xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

GeorginaA · 07/09/2004 09:39

Tammy, been there done that :(

Something else you can do - the police usually have a local crime prevention officer who will come around your house and advise on safety precautions (better locks, alarms etc) for free (Fire service does something similar for fire safety, too, I think). Would it be worth your peace of mind to get them to come around?

windypops · 07/09/2004 10:01

I have been there too, I was awoke one night by noises in the spare room, I had been having a clear out and there was a pile of coat hangers on the floor and I could hear movement, my ds 4 never gets up in the night, and his door was shut, I was so scared as could hear someone moving about. I remembered times where I have woken DH up only for it to be my imagination, so went in on my own, turns out dh had left the window open and a nearby cat thought it would have a wonder, I was so relieved, but couldn't sleep for hours wondering what could have been.

JuniperDewdrop · 07/09/2004 10:06

yeah im ok today thanks, went to bed with my hot chocolate and read a book for a while. still thinking of investing in a baseball bat lol. i might see if i can do that crime prevention thing GeorginaA. I usually hear noises during the night which never bother me, but just hearing the door creaking open just freaked me out.
