If you're interested in family history, this thread's just for you.

To begin my research on the internet I went to Google, put in 'Genealogy' and lots of sites came up. From then on, it's a matter of looking at sites that are pertinent to you. There are Family Name Boards and Surname Boards, where you can find information and leave messages. Some countries, such as South Africa and the US have searchable archives too.

Happy Ancestor Hunting!

I found the Rootsweb site very good. It does help if you have a distinctive surname - otherwise you need to spend time working ou which threads are pertinent to your own "line".

If you have a Scottish background (I don't, but do intend, one day, to research dh's history, to work out where he gets his dark colouring from - we suspect a shipwrecked Spaniard!), then all the Scottish Parish and census records from about 1500 up to 1900 have been put on line. I can't remember the web address - and you do have to pay for this service, but if you have specific details of, say, a great grandmother/father, then this would be a great way to go further back.
