Do you know whether he's going into self-catering halls or catered accommodation? If self catering, that opens up some options (lots of cookery books aimed at students on a low budget)? I expect it'll be difficult to find anything that an 18 year old boy will find exciting, even if you think it's exciting!Try to think of things they will use which will save them money. Extra tshirts WILL be welcome, as they won't have washing done for them! Or as his mum says, a soap bag and you could put some toiletries in, so he can divert his grant from toiletries to beer?! Cinema vouchers, which he could use over the summer anyway?

An alarm clock..... if he is like my son.
ipod speakers
cookery books

itunes vouchers

mummylin2495 · 25/06/2007 19:43

you can also get dvd players at a reasonable price, which most teens seem to like as its cheaper than the pictures

madamez · 25/06/2007 19:49

Depending on how much you know about his tastes and habits:
A tankard? (if he's traditonal or a bit of a folky)
A book on cocktail mixing with a couple of glasses and a bottle or two (if he's the suave type or wants to be)
A good rucksack if he likes hitching and going to festivals?

If in doubt, voucehrs for HMV or Virgin megastore - all 18 year olds will be able to find something they like in there be it games or music.

Amazon vouchers? Can spend on either text books (which cost a fortune!) or music, dvds, kitchen appliances such as toastie makers and alsorts of random things? My brother (21yrs) always appreciates Amazon vouchers.

i found this fab website as recommended in the guardian a couple of weeks back
www.threadless.com/catalog has t shirts designed by people and then voted by public whioch ones ahould get printed.. so they're quite unique and also becasue of interest rates between the us and uk at the mo they're supposed to be a really good deal.. plus some of them are very funny although all the ones i love are all sold out so you have to be quick.... but just spotted as well that you want it pronto... but i guarantee any 18 yr old off to uni would like a unique trendy t shirt! that no one else has got!

ja9 · 25/06/2007 21:07

tassis · 25/06/2007 21:09

have to dash into town with usual entourage and get something super quick tomorrow!
