We've done playdoh, messy play, treasure hunts, videos, dressing up, etc etc etc til the cows come home. Kids have cabin fever and so have I.

I just want to go outside!!!!!!

Actually you are right, I will go and make the most of it - will go and have a shower in my hallway

fryalot · 25/06/2007 15:34

people bitch about things way more trivial than torrential rain flooding your houses and your schools and your roads....

Also, in this country, we are not used to any extremes of weather, so we bitch about it being too hot, we bitch about it being too cold, too snowy, too wet, too windy....

If the weather was clement all the time, we would have nothing to talk about

snowleopard · 25/06/2007 15:36

But bitching constantly will brighten our day in a metaphorical sense!

Expat you are a remarkably well-naturalised scot, I've noticed, but you're just falling behind on the wetaher bitching. Come on, try harder!

expatinscotland · 25/06/2007 15:37

And then when it's 30 degrees and dry as a bone there'll be even more bitching.

Go on then! Some folks wouldn't know what to do for whining.

Been there! Done it! With swarms of disease-carrying mosquitos coming in on the flood waters, which were filled with schools of fire ants and water mocassins, a venomous snake, on top of all the usual lovely stuff. Oh, and then the f*cking power goes out because of the storm so it's 100 degrees with 90% humidity and you're surrounded by standing water as well. Nice!

That's a lot different to moaning about being stuck in the house because of rain. At least you've got one to be stuck in.

expatinscotland · 25/06/2007 15:39

The worst time of my life? After Hurricane Alicia in 1983.

House flooded, no running water, no power, f*&^ing mosquitos in swarms.

And then I got my period.

That's when I promised as soon as I could, I'd NEVER live in another hot, humid place again.

snowleopard · 25/06/2007 15:43

But expat, that's not weather, that's tropical disasters and terrifying beasties and apocalypse. This is British rain in June and endless moaning bitching is the only correct response. And the same is true for when it's too hot. Come on... it is pissing you off... isn't it... just a teensy bit?

expatinscotland · 25/06/2007 15:43

Oh, and in the middle of the storm, around 4AM, right before the power went, we saw my evil gerbil, Panchito, had escaped again. I saw him race across the hall as the lights flicked on and off.

He lived, the wee bastard! I found him on top of a wardrobe right before we had to clear out because the water was rising too fast.

snowleopard · 25/06/2007 15:44

expat have you thought of making all this into a film script?

SomethingIncrediblyWitty · 25/06/2007 15:47

I don't mind the getting wet bit, it's the staying wet that bothers me. No tumble dryer so every chair, clothes horse, and spare peg has clothes on it. 3 leaks in various parts of house, and baby has to sleep downstairs so i'm absolutely terrified of flooding in case it is sudden

On the brighter side, i don't like the heat either...i get migraine headaches from bright sunlight!

fryalot · 25/06/2007 15:49

SIW: Do you live close to a river or other waterway? If not, if you do get flooded it will not be sudden.

It only happens quickly when the river bursts its banks. A constant build up of rain just keeps getting steadily higher and higher, and you should have plenty of time to get yourselves out.

BandofMuggles · 25/06/2007 15:51

Am sick of not being able to do anything cos it's raining, not much to do indoors around here but when it's nice can at least walk to town or to the park.
Get Cabin Fever after 1 day and want to lock kids under the stairs for a moments peace

expatinscotland · 25/06/2007 15:51

No, it honestly isn't, snow. Because it's not as bad as a lot of people have it just now.

If you're bitching now, man, wait till you see what's in store!

For a quick preview, look at some footage of places like Bangladesh or even some Hurricane Katrina videos.

expatinscotland · 25/06/2007 15:53

Hurricanes SUCK. They truly do.

snowleopard · 25/06/2007 15:54

Sorry expat, I was only joking.

I do know that this is trivial compared to what some parts of the world sufffer (though as several have pointed out, this weather can be deadly too). But the point is we like to bitch about weather. It's not done on the basis of how trivial/serious it is. "Tis a glorious British tradition that binds us al together.

Donk · 25/06/2007 15:57

I just wish the school kids outside weren't splashing in the lovely big puddle which is blocking the road. They clearly think its very exciting. But its SEWAGE - coming out of the sewers.......
Yuck.
They have been told - but teenagers always know best.

expatinscotland · 25/06/2007 15:58

In Colorado, when you drive through canyons, there are all these road signs that read, 'Climb to Safety in Case of Flash Flood'.

Two buddies of ours got caught out one evening in a freak storm; one of them was a contributing writer for 'Rock and Ice' magazine.

And he wrote about their experience in an article entitled, 'Climb to Safety in Case of Flash Flood' .

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 25/06/2007 15:58

Oooh give me too hot over wet and cold anyday.

TinyGang · 25/06/2007 16:00

Agree - I'm sick of it too. It is grey, depressing and boring. Welcome to a traditional British Summer

expatinscotland · 25/06/2007 16:01

At least it provides a welcome reprieve to being subjected to that horse-faced Tim Henman all over the TV. Thankfully, he usually gets shut out pretty early.

HuwEdwards · 25/06/2007 16:03

agree re: Tim

however it is just about to lash down here - gone sooo dark

SomethingIncrediblyWitty · 25/06/2007 16:09

Not RIGHT next to a river, but within 20 mins walk. I did wonder!! I don't think i should worry too much then should I?

fryalot · 25/06/2007 16:11

I wouldn't worry too much, SIW.... keep an eye on it though - is it a river that is likely to flood?

You can check out your river here

The Environment Agency tend to be over-cautious, so if there is no flood warning or flood watch, you should be fine.

Mirage · 25/06/2007 19:54

I'm getting fed up now.I run a gardening business & I loose money every time the weather is too bad to work.Today I was lucky & got 8.5 hours in before it rained seriously.

Theb worst storm I was ever caught in was in Antelope Canyon Arizona- a supposedly arid place.I have never been so scared in my life. That was 10 years ago & I still remember it vividly.
