I'm doing voluntary work at the moment and am really wanting a proper job, preferably within the NHS so that I can a) afford a car and b) move house and get the kids in a better school.

Now, a job has just come up at the place I'm doing voluntary work but it would mean starting right at the begining of the summer holidays , its a good job and it would ensure my start in the NHS but we had all our summer planned, the kids were really looking foward to it, as was I...we've made plans with my mum to visit here and there which would all have to be cancelled if I got the job.

Also it would mean finding childcare for 7 weeks and I don't have anyone that could help out. And we have a week away booked for september so I'd need to ask for time off straight away.

So, do I let the job pass with the intentions to start looking for work after the holidays or cancel the summer holidays and go for the job?

You go for the job, and make it clear in the interview process that you want this job, but have some childcare things to sort out in the event that your application is successful. And ask if you can still take the September time off

Best of luck

Take the job

Go for the job. If you want to work in the near future you're going to have to sort the childcare thing out. Shame it's right at the beginning of the summer though!

Most employers will honour existing holiday commitments if you're upfront about them at the interview.
