I guess you'll be going along the A14 back to B'rum?
Not that I'm being biased as it's my home town but what about the historic market town of Oundle in N'hants?

Lots of family coffee shops/restaurants/pubs etc and pretty buildings and garden belonging to the very old public school to walk around.

Quaint shops to browse around and only an hour from Birmingham. At Thrapston, turn off the A14 onto the A605 and head to Peterborough, unless you're coming via the A605 from P'borough where you'll go straight past the town anyway.
