There seem to be so many variations on what ages people's children start school, when to enroll them, and all things educational! I don't know where to start! A lot of my childhood and several years of my adult life have taken place outside of England, and I'm not au fait with the correct procedures from enrollment upwards.....can anyone enlighten me please!

In Wales we start 'em young- just after 3- horrid isn't it. I think that England leaves them till 4 or nearly 5. If you contact your local education authority who will be based at your local council- just phone the main switchboard and ask for the education dept they'll send you information relevant to your area- how to register, local schools, ages etc etc

In England children tend to start in the September/January following their 4th birthday. Legally they have to be in education in the term after their 5th birthday.

How/when to enrol seems to depend on where you live and the policy of the school you are interested in. Here, for example, we had to phone the school up and let them know by March that we wanted ds1 to start school in September. The actual form-filling/registration was done in early June. Ds1 will be starting on 6th September, by which time he will be 4yrs 2mths.
