Dresses - why do you wear them?

Me and dp were having a Convo yesterday about this.
He believes dresses are stupid, silly to wear unless for an occasion such as prom, wedding, or going on a night out.
He believes they shouldn't be worn from day to day even if your just in the house.
His exception is 'if your a little girl. You put dresses on girls not women. When they're about 13 they should just stop wearing them!"

I obv disagree. I wear dresses round the house some days, easier than finding trousers and top to match. Leas effort with a dress! And also a dress can make me feel better sometimes too

I find them more comfortable, simple as that.

And much cooler in summer. In winter I wear a variety - dresses, skirts, trousers - but in summer it’s probably 80% dresses and the rest of the time skirts.

Unless someone is trying to convince him to wear a dresss, his opinion is pretty irrelevant. And unless he has worn dresses on a fairly regular basis, it’s uninformed.

AvoidingDM · 01/11/2018 08:04

Why would he put a wee girl in a dress, who's likely to want to run about play on stuff?

OldSpeclkledHen · 01/11/2018 08:04

I wear dresses because I'm tall and they make me look more a lady (I am a lady!) and also when I'm feeling fat, it's mice to not have something around my waist (dress skims over it)

OldSpeclkledHen · 01/11/2018 08:05

Nice! Not mice 🙄

Littlegreenegg · 01/11/2018 08:06

I only have to iron one piece of clothing.

CottonTailRabbit · 01/11/2018 08:07

As you wear dresses a lot I'd say this wasn't about dresses. This was about him wanting to have big old go at you. He was being a dick to you. Is that normal for him?

Micke · 01/11/2018 08:07

I didn't use to own any dresses. Then I had to go to a wedding where I knew the bride would appreciate me wearing a dress so I got a floral jersey number - and it was so comfortable. From then on it was my go-to lounging around the house wear, and I've bought another.

I still wouldn't wear one out generally (chub rub from walking), but around the house they are genius.

Point out to your husband OP, that wizards, monks, priests, many other cultures as standard dress - plenty of men wear robes (which are just a style of dress), and are perfectly happy in them - why is having a tube for each leg so important to him?

Soiree · 01/11/2018 08:08

I don't own a pair of trousers, I alwa6s west dresses. They're more comfortable, fit better on my awkward shape (trousers always gape at the waist), I don't have to think about coordinating things, and suit me better. I'm mid 30s, a mum with a masters, don't think wearing a dress makes me a little girl! Or look like one either. Maybe he's jealous, keep your wardrobe locked Wink

pickingdaisies · 01/11/2018 08:09

Because I'm a laydee. And your husband, words fail me. Tell him if he doesn't want to wear a dress, he doesn't have to. Then tell him to butt out.

IrenetheQuaint · 01/11/2018 08:09

They're really comfortable with no draught at the middle. Historically men have worn long robes in many different cultures, perhaps you should encourage him to experiment with them?

Mummaluelae · 01/11/2018 08:10

@CottonTailRabbit I don't think this was about me simply because I haven't worn a dress since about june, summer I was wearing mostly shorts and three quarter lengths tbh and now I'm between jeans, joggers and linen trousers

A dress is one item to wash / hang /store rather than two.

StarfishSandwich · 01/11/2018 08:10

I’s Rather wear a dress than a pair of skinny jeans! Free around the hips, no waistband or seams digging in, pockets you can actually put stuff in (if you’re lucky!), ease of leg movemt...

I’d argue a dress can be far more practical!

Soiree · 01/11/2018 08:10

Sorry about the typos. Trying to breastfeed and type!

Bestseller · 01/11/2018 08:11

What does he think you should wear instead.

I mostly wear them because it's easier than putting an "outfit" and much easier to be comfortable yet presentable than it is in seperates

randomsabreuse · 01/11/2018 08:11

They are much more forgiving in fit if you are curvy - narrow waist, larger thighs and arse tend to be annoying in trousers (usually gaping waist and just about acceptable on thighs), worse in most skirts (They just go round and around)

I wear lots of skater and soft tailored shift dresses if trying to look vaguely smart. Hard to get women's trousers with functional belt loops too...

RoseMartha · 01/11/2018 08:12

I wear dresses and skirts because i prefer them to jeans and trousers. I do wear jeans sometimes not every week though.

Thesearmsofmine · 01/11/2018 08:12

I wear dresses every day. They are comfortable and suit me better than trousers.

GoofyIsACow · 01/11/2018 08:12

Tights are sooooo warm!

PearsOfWisdom · 01/11/2018 08:13

Why does your BF care so much about what random women wear ?

Or is he opining about what you wear ? In which case he’s an arse.

Mummaluelae · 01/11/2018 08:15

He seems to think 'overweight people wear them because they can't fit in to trousers properly' I pointed out that wasnt true as I am overweight. I wear dresses yes but not nearly as much as my jeans!
Also 'old ladies wear dresses they are never in trousers' I don't know what he definea as 'old' but our mums are both in 60's, i haven't seen my mum in a dress since she was in her 40's and she is overweight. My mil is slim and wears dresses, catsuits it doesn't matter what it is she will wear what she feels good in. My nan (before passed) always wore dresses but my other nan I never remember her wearing a dress ever, she's more into her trousers or jeggings with converse!

I prefer dresses, I like soft ones with leggings underneath in winter. No belts and zips needed, easy

nuttyknitter · 01/11/2018 08:19

I'm with your DP, except about little girls. I never wear dresses.

PoesyCherish · 01/11/2018 08:21

That's such a weird opinion for him to take. I love wearing dresses because they are so comfortable and I like the way they look. I'm not technically overweight at the moment and I'm a size 8 so I don't think it rings true that only overweight adults wear them. As for little girls, my DSD rarely wears dresses (only if she's forced by her Mum for special occasions) and most of her friends don't wear dresses either. They're not exactly very comfortable for running around in and climbing things in parks etc.

JessicaJonesJacket · 01/11/2018 08:21

He seems very opinionated on what women and 'overweight' people wear . . . and it just so happens that you say you're both of those. He's using 'his universal truth' approach to put you down. Has he been your DP for long? Because I wouldn't be entertaining any of those conversations.

As for your original question, I wear dresses because they are comfortable, because they are easy to wear (one piece instead of having to co-ordinate separates).
