Little Princess Hair Donation

My daughter has beautiful long hair but it’s got a bit too long so wants a chop. She’s been toying with the idea of donating it to the Little Princess foundation who raise money and donate wigs to children and going people who have lost their hair mainly with cancer. I have been encouraging this obviously, though she always gets nervous before hair cuts!

My lovely friend who lives quite far has been having chemo for breast cancer since July but has only just told us (small group of friends from when we were teenagers). She has no hair, is petrified and feels like total s*t. F**ing cancer. She has been keeping it all to herself- only confiding in her sister. Obviously I’m all over the place after this news and now feel even more strongly that my daughter should donate hair she has chopped off....
Daughter is only 13 and is worried that the desired 30cm is a bit more than she intended to have off.

Could you wonderful Mumsnetters please send words of encouragement that I can show my daughter?? Any shared hair donation stories would be good too!

I’m currently growing my hair for the same reason but because they want a minimum of 12 inches and I don’t suit short hair, I’ve been growing it out for over a year! It’s such a lovely idea though.

If she's nervous that 30cm is too much, could she wait until her hair has grown a little more before donating?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 27/10/2018 23:42

My 7 year old did that this year and really suited the short bob. 8 months later her hair is half way there again, it grows so quickly if she doesn’t like it.

LookingThroughTheLookingGlass · 27/10/2018 23:43

It’s to her bottom so it won’t be that short after losing 30cm however the tangles are intense sometimes 🙄
It’s in great condition, no split ends and I have suggested waiting till Xmas

If she doesn’t want to do it, she shouldn’t. Don’t pressure her.

I donated my hair to this charity a few years ago. At first I was a bit worried too with how much needs to be cut off but at the end of the day it's only hair which will (and has) grown back. It's a lovely thing that your daughter is thinking about doing this and I know it would be much appreciated x

LookingThroughTheLookingGlass · 27/10/2018 23:46

I’m only offering gentle encouragement. Though I do think it’s important for children to learn to think of others.

My daughter did it a couple of years ago and still talks about it now. She is talking about doing it again when her hair has grown a bit longer!!

This is starting to read like research....

mrsbob · 27/10/2018 23:50

Meant to add, she as only 8 when she donated and 18 months later it's nearly back to the length it was 😀

Branleuse · 27/10/2018 23:52

Dont they sell it privately and then just give some of the money. I dont think they use the hair for cancer sufferers, they just sell it

Letsgetreadytorumba · 27/10/2018 23:58

Honestly, if she doesn’t want to, don’t make her.

Letsgetreadytorumba · 28/10/2018 00:01

It gets sent to China branleause, they don’t guarantee it will be used or specifically in a wig for kids.

I had a real hair wig, I don’t even know what charity it was donated by, but it was great and a lot of people didn’t realise it was a wig. That said, if it’s too much for her to chop don’t do it just so it can go to the charity, she’ll have plenty of haircuts in her life.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/10/2018 13:34

DD had long curly hair and last month she had it cut shoulder length (ca. 40 cm off). Her hair went to a charity that uses the hair to create wigs locally. So if she wanted, she could find out who got a wig including her hair.

How did you find out how to do this??
