Is 35 too old to have long hair?

I've just been looking at Rachel on Friends and how nice she looked with very long hair - the thing is at 35 I kind of feel I am too old for that kind of hairstyle but I kind of hanker after it (I had long hair for many years when younger). Do you think that women of my age should restrict themselves to shorter hairstyles or is it ok to go long again (despite also having a patch of grey I don't really want to dye out).
Not a very serious topic I know...

Personally I think shorter hair looks more sophisticated on older women - mind you 35 is not exactley old - I was thinking more about 50s or 60s with long hair!!

libb · 27/08/2004 11:43

In my twenties I always remember someone telling me that women over thirty should have short hair because otherwise they look like they are trying too hard. For what exactly?

Now that I am 31 I want long hair! and I will grow it before getting impatient for a life changing style this time! I mean it . . .

StickyNote · 27/08/2004 11:45

Good grief, I hope not . Is 35 old??

Ixel · 27/08/2004 11:46

Long hair is wonderful, no matter what age. Anyway, even if you're not sure, you can put long hair up but you cant take short hair down! Dont dye the grey... once you start down that road, you cant stop doing it! I intend to NEVER cut my hair. I also like it because it seems to offset the excess weight on me! I want to look like a Miss Haversham type character when I'm old.

posyhairdresser · 27/08/2004 11:49

Go for it - my friends with long hair at this age look great.

It is definitely more slimming than short hair, too...

SenoraPostrophe · 27/08/2004 12:01

what are you talking about? Of course it's not too old. You're only too old to have long hair when it starts thinning out IMO.

Debbiethemum · 27/08/2004 12:08

I hope it's not too old as I have long hair (down to my waist) and I am 38. Also as others have said you can always put it up

I have longish hair due to a pathelogical fear of hairdressers. I don't give a toss what other people think about it. I do dye it cos I am far too grey for my age (32). I do periodically chop it all off and then spend the next 2 years growing it again.

Miaou · 27/08/2004 12:43

I've got long hair too, I'm 33. I don't dye it either. I will get it cut short only when either a) it gets too grey (I won't dye it) or b) it gets too thin.

I think that as long as you keep the ends neat, and style it somehow (by which I mean not leave it straggling round your face - tucked behind your ears looks fine IMHO!), then how could anyone say you are mutton dressed as lamb?

Just don't do a Liz MacDonald!!!!

Skate · 27/08/2004 12:54

WHAT!?!? No way is 35 too old for long hair! Go girl! 35 is not old is it?!

mckenzie · 27/08/2004 13:02

I hope not. I'm 38 and I've got long hair.
A tad shorter than it was yesterday courtesy of the most expensive High Street hair cut in history but that's another story.

motherinferior · 27/08/2004 13:02

I grew mine long again in my late 30s. I did dye it though. It's short again now, but nothing to do with my age.

Goldfish · 27/08/2004 13:20

I am 39 and I have long hair. I havent got any grey hair yet and I do get it trimmed regularly.
I have no plans to get it cut and I will be 40 soon! People do say it looks nice but I don't really care anyway. I don't feel old at 39. I always thought I was still quite young really- young at heart anyway

lou33 · 27/08/2004 13:26

I'm 37 and mine is about 3 inches past my shoulders. I had really short hair for most of my teens and twenties, so I'm enjoying having long hair right now.

Azure · 27/08/2004 13:38

I certainly hope not - I'm 37 and my hair is around 4 inches below my shoulders. I've been dying my hair for a good 8 years due to going grey. Mind you, it does look a mess a lot of the time - I really should go to the hairdresser more than twice a year. I've never heard about age being a barrier to having long hair - and 35 is not old.

CountessDracula · 27/08/2004 14:13

WHAT!!! How can you think that? (beety, baaaaaaaahhhhhh btw ;))

I think as long as have a regular trim and don't go for a sort of cat woman look (as in smelly house not super heroine!) then it looks great. Maybe some long layers or choppy bits at the bottom to make it more interesting. And invest in some GHDs if you have any frizz!

Pagan · 27/08/2004 14:33

I don't think any age is too old for long hair. I'm 35 and have long hair. I also dye it as I started going grey at 21. I had shortish hair once and just did not suit it and felt I looked too boyish. It's what suits you after all. My hair is my comfort blanket and what makes me feel most feminine. I shall die with long(ish) hair but shall go grey gracefully once I'm the other side of 50. I've seem some much older women with long hair and they look so sophisticated.

Had a quick shufty on web \link{http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip004.htmsee here}

Pagan · 27/08/2004 14:34

oops

see here

littlemissbossy · 27/08/2004 14:40

well I'm 35 and as I've been growing my hair for years (2 yrs in fact and only shoulder length) there's no way in hell I'm going for the chop now!!! although I agree with Countess, your hair still needs a regular good cut and hair straightners

SenoraPostrophe · 27/08/2004 14:44

I like the cat lady look! Saves on hairbrushes.

BooMama · 27/08/2004 14:46

Well, Arabella2, I just did a search on Jennifer Aniston and she is 35 too so there you go!
I have long hair which has some long layers and a fringe so looks a bit choppy and it is the most flattering hairstyle I have had in decades. (BTW I was 30 three weeks ago and intend to have my 'twentysomething' haircut for a good while yet!)

edam · 27/08/2004 14:48

Um, what's all this about straighteners? Something wrong with women over 35 having curly hair? Because I'm 35 with naturally curly hair so I'm ready to take offence... (and MI assures me that it looks nice so there!).

It's not too long at the moment but varies between chin-length and below the shoulders depending on what mood I'm in when I go to the hairdresser. As far as I can see, as long as your hair looks nice, what's age got to do with it? Has anyone told Cher to get it all cut off? (actually, does she still have long hair, can't remember...)

Azure · 27/08/2004 14:57

Oh God, I'm depressed reading that article in the link by Pagan. When I am 40 in a little over 2 years time I won't consider myself to be in the same age bracket as Cher or Joan Collins.

suedonim · 27/08/2004 15:05

It's nothing to do with age, imo, but all to do with its condition and the person's facial looks. One of my friends is 40+ and I can't imagine her with anything but long hair. Another 40+ friend has recently grown hers and to be frank, it looks awful - she's very thin and now looks like a witch, with a pointy nose and sparse, straggly hair!!

My sister had her beautiful thick, wavy, hair short for years and it was most unflattering. Now it's longer, it softens her face and makes her look younger. I'm nearly 50 and my hair is currently longer than it's been for years, not intentionally but I just couldn't be bothered to go to the hairdresser. My hair is like my sis's and I've only a few grey hairs so I think it looks okay.
