Is 35 too old to have long hair?

I've just been looking at Rachel on Friends and how nice she looked with very long hair - the thing is at 35 I kind of feel I am too old for that kind of hairstyle but I kind of hanker after it (I had long hair for many years when younger). Do you think that women of my age should restrict themselves to shorter hairstyles or is it ok to go long again (despite also having a patch of grey I don't really want to dye out).
Not a very serious topic I know...

Julianne Moore looks fantastic with long hair well into her 40s, I think Madonna looks better with long hair and Jennifer Aniston herself is well over 30. I don't know what you are worried about!

Edam I'm with you on the curly hair front. My hair is naturally almost dead straight, but I am going to have it turned into big loose sexy curls permanently asap, because I am fed up spending 2 hours doing it myself, only for it to be dropping out by the end of the evening!

And by chance, I read in Glamour mag the other day, that curls are the way to go, straight hair is out of favour apparently.

Avalon · 27/08/2004 15:26

I hope not! I'm 43 and my hair's very long. Mind you, I was thinking of having it cut ...

bungo · 27/08/2004 15:30

I always thought the original Rachel 'do' was better than the long ironed-straight style anyway! But in the end isn't it about what suits you rather than what's-right-at-what-age? Like that stupid question they ask people in the Times T2 interviews - "how old is too old for a mini?" Who cares?! If YOU feel you look good then chances are you do!

Branster · 27/08/2004 15:34

not at all, especially if you look about 20 (like me ).
seriouslly, i don't see any problem with long hair regardless of age. BUT it must look immaculate, regular trims, peofessionally coloured, well conditioned hair, no frizzy bits or lack of shine. so as long as it's in very good condition and looks neat, doesn't matter what age you are for long hair.

iota · 27/08/2004 15:36

blimey Branster, my hairs quite short and doesn't look immaculate - what do you do in the damp weather or when it's windy?

Branster · 27/08/2004 15:42

i'm actually quite lucky to have very low maintenance hair. i just wash it every evening before going to bed, hardly ever use a hairdrier and in the morning i don't have to do anything to it. it is very straight and i only condition it once a week and it's doing OK with this regime.
it only needs brushing and i'm off to start the day. pure luck i suppose.
i couldn't imagine having to use tons of styling products to keep it in shape as i don't have the patience for all that.
it looks good though, even if i say so myself

Branster · 27/08/2004 15:43

iota when it's windy i tie it back with a hair clip, and damp weather doesn't affect it at all because it is not styled as such, it's just naturally straight

CountessDracula · 27/08/2004 15:45

Edam I said you need GHDs if you have frizz, not curly hair! I would love curly hair actually. Mine is just a big ball of frizz though without my GHDs :(

MadameButterfly · 27/08/2004 15:51

I have a friend who is 44 and has waist enghth hair,so NO 35 is not too old

Jennisaurus · 27/08/2004 16:00

Long hair makes life easier, I can't imagine ever chopping mine off, I think as long as your hair is not too thin and is in good condition look hair can look fantastic at any age!

XenaWP · 27/08/2004 16:07

have only 1 baby, 10.5 weeks old, no older siblings to cause havoc & feel lucky if I wash my hair once a week at the mo'. twice is equivalent to a spa visit ... am 36, have long hair permanently tied back, but the point is - it would look 1,0000000000000000 times worse if it was short - would have to style it etc to hide the horror that lurks there, but with long hair I can just about get away with it
mind you. i can remember what it feels like to have your hair looking 'done'.
i think

spook · 27/08/2004 16:12

Good grief Arabella2. 35 isn't too old for ANYTHING!! (well-maybe a tad overenthusiastic) I'm 37 & you should see some of the get ups I go out in. And no I don't feel like mutton. As long as your hair is healthy and shiny then go for it!!

suzywong · 27/08/2004 16:14

Certainly not too old!

lou33 · 27/08/2004 16:17

Madame!

suzywong · 27/08/2004 16:18

get on MSN - I've got broadband now!!!!

CP3 · 27/08/2004 16:18

God i hope not, mine is quite long.

arabella2 · 27/08/2004 22:36

Thanks. I guess I am being a bit prematurely one foot in the grave... anyway, I will go for it and see what it looks like.
I asked my mother and she said over 40 it was best not to have long hair so I guess the prejudice persists.

blossomhill · 27/08/2004 22:38

Definitely not! 30 is the new 20. I would say that though as I'll be 30 next month.
I am in the process of growing my hair and lots of my friends in there mid thirties have long hair. My mum is 56 and has a shoulder length bob, it looks fine.

whizzz · 27/08/2004 22:39

No - only if it growing out of your nose.
(oops sorry !)

I'm 38 and mine is well past my shoulders - and will be when I am 88!
You can always clip it up

lydialemon · 28/08/2004 00:25

I hope 35 isn't too old, as I'm 33 and only just managing to grow my hair again, after chopping it all off when DS1 was a baby and insisted on hanging on it all the time!

Whats wrong with dying your hair? My hair hasn't been its natural colour since I was 12. I don't think I've got any grey hairs yet, but I'm not going to let it get natural enough to find out

carla · 28/08/2004 00:52

Beety, I'm glad to hear that. So what do people put in their long (and at 39 and increasingly grey) hair to separate the strands? Hmmm? Come on you lot!

AussieSim · 28/08/2004 01:09

I think length and style of hair have everything to do with the shape of your face and not your age. I had long hair for ages but the truth is that a short bob suits my face much much better. I was always lazy with my long hair too and 90% of the time it was in a pony tail which my DH found a bit frumpy.
