Adverts we hate

I've started this one because of something someone said on another thread about overly sexualised advertising.

My prize idiot award this week goes to the TV exec who thought that running a program about matchmaking with the tag line "25 eager beavers - 1 lucky Jim" was humorous in an ironic, post modern way.

My other pet hate is the "look, my tampon looks like a sweet so that I will not be humiliated by the fact that you know I have periods" advert. Oh yes, that's a fantastic message to be giving to young women - a natural part of your life is so shameful that no one must know. (I had hoped we had progressed beyond having to hide tampons - although it took many weeks of negotiation to get DH to add tampons to shopping when he went).

Bring back the blue dye ..............

My most hated one is the dubbed deoderant one where the boy says "can I get you anything and the girl says "No I have my own deoderant" SORRY!! and then she says she is free for the next 79 nights - it's so rubbish - and that other one about some car with the geordie bloke ding the "don't you want me baby" thing - I run him over and leave there personally.

leander · 31/07/2002 14:03

The Bernard Matthews Pizza one it gets right on my nerves

I'm really proud of myself. Today I did something I've been threatening to do for ages - complain to the ASA about those awful "slag" Pot Noodle adverts. One of our local Heads was in the paper complaining about it as there was a huge poster near the school and the paper interviewed a spokesperson from Pot Noodle. They said that in their target age range (18-35) they had questioned a number of people about it, including parents of young children, apparently, the majority of whom had found it humourous and clever, implying therefore that anyone who doesn't like the ad is somehow missing the very amusing, post-modern, ironic point. Blah! It makes me mad!!! I wonder how many people they interviewed to see whether they objected to the term "slag" being used like any other word; totally acceptable and non-offensive, by all the kids who pass the poster on the way to school?
Sorry - rant over!

aloha · 31/07/2002 14:41

Good for you Rara, I must get round to doing the same. It just puts you in such an impossible position when children ask what these things mean. If you try to say that slag just means 'a silly person' (my usual explanation when my stepdaughter was younger), it just means they use the term themselves and can't understand why you get so outraged. It's a horrible, stupid, sexist, nasty advert that is totally inappropriate for children to see - and not a bit funny either. Grrr.

Jendy · 31/07/2002 15:45

I agree about the pot noodle adverts, several friends (male and female) have said it most definately isn't funny or clever. My friend's nine year old daughter asked 'why is pot noodle a prostitute?'!!!

Lucy123 · 31/07/2002 16:04

I did actually find the pot-noodle advert funny, but putting it on posters near schools (or posters or pre-watershed TV at all for that matter) is absolutely outrageous! Also hate the tampon / deodorant ads.

Bozza · 31/07/2002 17:02

Do I bury my head in the sand or what? I have never seen the pot noodle advert. TBH the only commercial TV I watch is Coronation street and I have to have this videoed so that I can put DS to bed. Anyway I watch it while I iron and fast forward the adverts. I feel as though I am missing out on popular culture

Fionn · 31/07/2002 18:59

Bozza - Cozzer is the only ITV programme I watch too, so like you I've never seen these ads. I can't even bear to listen to any commercial radio, I hate ads so much. But I do particularly dislike all car ads, it amazes me that a car is a lifestyle accessory for so many people. Some beer ads are funny though, like Boddingtons.

I agree....Pot Noodles, DFS, that deodorant 1.....what about the Iceland ones????

I do like the Va-Va-Voom adverts (tho can't be that good cos I can't remember what car it's meant to be selling...) the bloke is veeeeery sexy!

Back to the subject...I object to overtly sexual adverts. As someone said on another thread, society has become so sexualised. I worry about taking my kids out when schools out because of the things you hear from the mouths of the youngest children....it's sad that children are no longer allowed a childhood. But, I digress...

jasper · 31/07/2002 23:39

Gumdrop, I so agree about that dreadful tampon ad- also if it is designed to be "discrete" ie not look like a tampon why do they have a flippin' national ad campaign to show everyone THIS IS A TAMPON ???

jasper · 31/07/2002 23:42

..and those many many ads which centre around bratty kids with mothers who are basically their slaves , smiling indulgently as muddy kid messes up clean floor on way to the fridge, kids turning up their nose at their lunch box, and remember that awful "FEED ME!" one?

jasper · 31/07/2002 23:43

SUNNY DELIGHT.....argh!

jodee · 01/08/2002 00:02

In total agreement with the hatred of the Pot Noodle ads, and here's my top 3 woeful ones:

Halifax - all singing all dancing bank clerks - no thanks!

The Standard Life Family - arghh!

Synchronised Babies Swimming - can't remember what it's supposed to be selling but it's awful!

sml · 01/08/2002 13:02

I hate the jaffa cake ads with the horrid teacher. Far from making me want to buy jaffa cakes, it just makes me think of all the poor children in the world who have no parents to look after them and are exploited by adults. And it's insulting to teachers too!

Gumdrop · 01/08/2002 13:03

Oh - and the ones for Flash 1)where the man does it in a jiffy using flash, because his wife is too dumb to save herself time and effort by using it herself and will think he has been slaving over bath forever and 2) where the man clears up huge mess in kitchen and pretends it never happened - to preempt wifely nagging.

I'll never buy it now on principle.

Isn't that bloke in the va-va-voom adverts Thierry Henry from Arsenal?
When I was on mat. leave, I couldn't quite believe how many adverts there are in the day for debt and compensation companies! I wonder how many disadvantaged/desperate/downright idiotic people are taken in by these"Reduce your outgoings from £1000 per month to just £150" claims? I presume they can do this by tying the customer up to a 25 year loan or something? Disgraceful!
I also hate the Muller light advert where the mum takes the yoghurt out of the kid's lunch box so she can eat it in the car (not least because of the kid's hair, which looks like Bjorn from Abba's!)

bea · 01/08/2002 14:48

ooooo! SML i do hate that advert!

in fact that teacher should get a good slapping on the good slapping thread!
i'll give her a flippin' full moon!!!
