cos i do. we live in a village which is very mixed ie:the doctor lives 2 streets away from the local drunk iyswim. we used to live in a small house in the nicer bit of town, but we outgrew it and now live in a lovely old house in the less nice bit. it is quiet at night, but noisy with kids at times which i don't usually mind as i have one! my problem is that i sometimes feel that i don't fit in on this street. i'm going to sound like a dreadful snob but tbh, it is inverted snobbery on the part of my neighbours which is the problem. noone is nasty, but htey keep their distance. i am a "joiner-in" person, so it's not that i back off. anyone else had a similar experience and how did you handle it?

I have found in the past that if you think somebody is ignoring you, ignore them back. It's amazing how many times they nearly fall over themselves to acknowledge you. My DH and I are both shy so that can come across as aloof as well.

Yes, can identify as have always been the odd one out! I lived on a council estate as a young child and never fited in as I was 'bookish'. Worked in sales most of my working life and never fitted in'cos I was decrined by one colleague as being 'too intellectual' (NB now as I am relatively successful it doesn't matter).
Am he only one of my friends to have married a man with kids and therefore be a stepmum.
Am now a curious hybrid between SAHM and WOHM as I have term=tme only working, have a full time job, but always someone manage to deliver & pick up kids form school, so am also not in either entrenched camp when the sparring starts on the Xenian threads.
Still - I live in hope that in old age I might find an old people's home where I'll finally fit in....(tho' that would be ODD after all these years)
Just enjoy the freedom you have as an outsider...
