How did you feel when your youngest started school?

DS2 is starting school in September & I just can't get my head around it at all! I still think of him as my baby, even though he is probably a lot more ready for school than DS1 was.

I remember being really upset when DS1 finished nursery, but the thought of him starting school didn't bother me quite as much as it is with DS2. Not sure if that is because he was that little bit older (September birthday), or maybe it is something about DS2 being the baby of the family. He just seems too little to me!

Did anyone else feel a bit like this when their youngest approached school?

I don't have children of my own, but i'm a professional nanny. But, my darling godaughter is due to start school in september and i'm dreading it . I'm even condidering taking the morning off work so i can be there . I know her mum (my cousin) will be very upset to see her 'baby' go to school. It's so hard!

Pinkchampagne · 13/06/2007 22:55

It is hard.

I went to DS2's pre school meeting today & just sat there thinking "He can't be starting school!"
Doesn't help that he is the size of a two year old, so just keep looking at him thinking that he is far too little for school!

Maybe you could try and think about it being a new adventure you are going to go on together . Think of all those lovely plays, and school events you can attend as a family . When my eldest charge first went to school, i was in an awful state and she wasn't even mine !

I cried for weeks leading up to it (my youngest of 3), setting other new parents off at pre-school parents evenings! But when it came to the crunch, it was really fine, no tears! I think the thought of it is worse than the reality. Now I enjoy my sanity at home alone for a few hours. But when they leave primary for secondary - now that may be worse!!

I will be in tears when my eldest moves on to secondary school in Sept, it feels like only yesterday that she had her first day at infants!

PC - am in the same boat. With DD1, I was cool mum, with DD2 am def not.

I will be skipping out the playground when ds goes in september.

I will be very emotional when dd leaves home which could be in 3 yrs

thelittleElf · 13/06/2007 23:19

I've just remembered something my mum told me. Apparently on my first day at school she made my dad sit outside the school in the car all day, incase i didn't like it and wanted to come home ....bless!

unknownrebelbang · 13/06/2007 23:21

Fine - it was the first time ever I'd had all three in one place!

Toughest time for me was when my eldest started secondary school.

No way was I mature enough to have a child in high school.

handlemecarefully · 13/06/2007 23:23

I felt relieved, truly.

I love dd immensely but I love a bit of time to myself too. Looking forward to ds starting in September 2008.

gemmiegoatlegs · 13/06/2007 23:26

i cried when ds staryted, and i know my heart will break when dd starts next year. i feel she has missed out on thwat one on one time and we are only starting to have that time together since ds started school. I think its all tangled up with the idea that i know she is my last baby

thelittleElf · 13/06/2007 23:32

Aww thats got to be hard

Pinkchampagne · 14/06/2007 08:13

My DS2 is most definitely my last baby too, and maybe that's why I feel so sad about him being old enough to go off to school.

Thing is, I work in the school too (although never in the classes DS's will be in), so I should be fine about it all. I just look at DS2 & think he is far too little for school!
