last weekend we were burgled and they took EVERY key they could find.
car keys, spare car keys, front/back door, sjhed, window keys, garage keys etc etc

but now we have the replacements we can't decide whre to keep them.

e.g. window keys ..windows need to be locked to stop them getting in again but we need to be able to get out in an emergency too.

spare car keys ... well jsut where?

keys that you need regunalarly but not enough to be on your main key ring???

could you please share your key-homes with me and something might jsut work for us.

Wherever DD has left hem re car keys

LynetteScavo · 02/06/2007 22:55

So they didn't take your car?

We keep our keys in a key cabinet in the hall, which would be quite handy for a burgular to find. In our last house, we kept all keys in a drawer in the kitchen.

AuntyQuated · 02/06/2007 22:59

no they didn't taek the car....i reckon they were disturbed as they had the key for the door. but it wouldn't open from the inside, however it was 2 o'clock in the sfatrenoon so maybe they thought opening it with hte key was too risky. they took my bike instead and scartched the car getting it out

We keep ours in a key cabinet, which is inside a cupboard in the kitchen. We do try to remember to put all the keys back in there when we've used them, but don't always.

MaureenMLove · 02/06/2007 23:07

Maybe its not a key cabinet that you need, but a burglar alarm. Like you say, window keys need to be easily accessible and you'd have to be pretty consiencious to put all the keys away every time you left the house.

AQ . Sorry to hear that. Hope you are ok.

pootlepod · 02/06/2007 23:09

AQ

We have the window keys beside each window on a little cup hook, don't think that would be a problem regarding thieves getting in IYSWIM.

Main keys are kept on a hidden from view hook so easy enough to get to if we need to in the night. Think if they are in a drawer they'll find them there TBH given enough time. Might be an idea not to label them to make it harder, and to spread them around the place? Or you could buy a lockable key cupboard like you would find in offices?

Have you thought about getting an alarm?

UCM · 02/06/2007 23:09

I would love to tell you but to tell you online would be madness. I will email you though.

BreeVanDerCamp · 02/06/2007 23:11

The downstairs window keys are in the drawer of the faux coffee grinder.

Upstairs the window key is over the light in the bathroom.

The car keys are in a fuddle puddle that no self respecting burgular would pick through.

Busybean · 02/06/2007 23:16

fwiw i would get a new front and back door with 2 locks each, look closely at your garden security-have you got a high fence/hedge? secure all things outside ie ladders etc with a paddlock, shed with a padlock etc
think about getting a security alarm
think about a security light

AuntyQuated · 02/06/2007 23:18

thanks ucm - we are ok - just pretty pi$$ed off and very inconvenienced.

All the doors in our house have one key. We have two copies. I have one on my key ring (It is in my bag at all times) and DH has his on his key ring (they sit by the toaster when he is at home).

AuntyQuated · 03/06/2007 09:31

when you go out together do you take both sets?

mine were by the fruitbowl...we went out in dh's car.

do you take them upstairs when you go to bed?

so many ???s are going round my head

Front door, back door, laundry door and french doors all have same key ... really easy (it isn't our house, we rent and I think it is such a good idea)
I tend to take my handbag upstairs with me at night and I never leave it in the kitchen near the back door (I had my purse nicked from it once, from the kitchen, when I was at home )
When we go out together I take my keys with me in my bag.

AuntyQuated · 03/06/2007 09:46

one key is a really good idea; so long as it isn't common, otherwise once they'd found a key they would know that they hd the lot iyswim
