Help! Smelly carpet

I accidentally spilled a cup of very milky tea on my cream wool mix carpet the other day and there is a really nasty musty smell coming from it. I cleaned it straight away with Vanish then plain water and have just tried a mix of water and washing powder but it still smells awful. I've tried getting some Febreze but nowhere seems to stock it any more. I tried another carpet deodoriser-can't remember the name- that went on as foam but it didn't work, just left a whiff of horrible aftershave for an hour or so.

Any advice much appreciated!!

Feel free to call me mad for getting the carpet with a dog, 2 cats and a baby in the house...

Shaws carpet cleaning and smell remover for dog accidents it's great. I use it for milk with coffee DH drinks and spill around the house every morning...

Cover with Baking Soda - leave for 15 mins and then hoover up.

Apparenlty Club Soda will get rid of cat pee smell too (been watching too much crap telly me thinks!!)

I really don't know about too much telly but if they do a book out of Channel 4's "how clean is your house" I will be getting it... sometimes I think I'm like Monica in Friends but without the enrgy to get myself to do the cleaning

Right, am off to cover carpet in Baking Soda. Fingers crossed!
