If I want to buy something through eBay and payment is only via Paypal do I need to set up a paypal account or how does it work?

Yes you need to set up a Paypal account. Go to www.paypal.com with your bank details. It's easy to do and gets activated within a day or two.

Check the seller's feedback before bidding and remember most of that 'genuine' designer stuff is fake. Happy Bidding.

Thanks ... one more question - if I bid on an item that ends today (and win it) will the transaction fail cos Paypal isn't activated yet or can I bid and pay in a couple of days?

My paypal account was activated straight away when I opened it, so yours should be too

Most ebayers would be happy to wait a couple of days, so if it isn't activated straight away just send an email to the seller and explain. Happy bidding!
