New Front/Back doors - anyone had one? I need one.. can't believe what I was quoted last night!

Sorry didn't know where to put this.

I need a new front and back door, the front door needs a side panel next to it.. so I was half expecting it would be around the £1k mark. Had a quote last night and it was over £2k

Does anybody have any idea of the going rate you can expect to pay?

i had a porch done , well really it was just a front door with an equal sized panel next to it and also had floor raised. Cost £1000. Have just had sliding patio doors put in and that cost £850.

I'd have thought around up to £1.5k if you live in home counties less elsewhere. You need to find an independent fitter who is happy to do smaller jobs as and when he can fit them in, large companies tend to only do good deals if you buy a lot of windows all in one go.

Recently got a new back door - half glazed for £500.

It sounds like it'll be worth getting some extra quotes.

sorry to hijack but we need a new front door, where did you all get yours from?

lionheart · 23/05/2007 17:56

About £800 recently for pretty standard door, but no extra panels.

Desiderata · 23/05/2007 18:04

Can't help with any suggestions, but I am constantly staggered by the cost of doors.

Let's break it down. It's a panel, made of either wood or UPVC, of a standard width and height. A well-trained gibbon (with suitable encouragement and salary), could probably make one.

One thousand pounds a door?? Surely that's called profiteering?

TwoIfBySea · 23/05/2007 20:41

Mascara my parents got their doors done. One company that advertises a lot up here quoted £3k for the two doors.

We shopped around and found a local company that did both doors for just over £800. They do the job just as well and they were recommended.

So find out who is recommended in your area.

don't have safe style

I agree with you regarding the extortionate pricing,we found this a real problem too.One company quoted us for a pvc door and side window around £1800.
We waited and found an independant fitter through dp's work collegue ,we paid £580.

I used to work in a double glazing factory in the office (not a gibbon, thank you I didn't cold call!) had lots of people saying the same thing when they came in for a quote. I would say definately go for a smaller company. The bigger ones such as Anglian and Zenith etc are quite expensive. If we had someone such as yourself come in we would recommend the nicest and best builders who bought windows from us to fit the door. And then take you through the different options... a small tip is if there is a Hallmark panels brochure (a common door panel supplier) there are no prices but it starts with the most expensive with etched glass inserts, then stained glass, then plain obscured glass, then solid panels.
HTH any others q's please fire away, its unusual to be able to help with the knowledge from that particularly boring job!!

Desiderata - PMSL.

I'll ask around to see if anybody recommend someone I think.

Lol lol @ gibbon
