what do weevils look like?

Rhubarb · 16/07/2002 18:56

My sister had these, in her flour and caster sugar. She thought they were just flour mites that everyone had - but managed to convince her otherwise with my look of disgust! Agree with SuW about vacuuming them out, then spray shelves with dettox and buy some new flour! Don't be embarrassed, nearly everyone gets these sooner or later!

SofiaAmes · 16/07/2002 19:39

yes, i had them in my cupboard in la and never managed to get rid of them. I just kept my flour, sugar etc. in ziplock bags or other sealable containers. Don't worry it happens to everyone....

When we lived in the middle east, we used to put new bags of flour, sugar etc in the freezer for 24 hrs and that seemed to sort the little buggers out!

Had this happen last summer - sought advice and was told to throw out all perishables - eg flour, rice, pasta etc that they could have gotten in to. Then bought a load of tupperware pots to put replacement packets in, so at least if it happens again I'll have contained the little bs

What's the difference between weevils and flour mites? I once had some tiny bugs in my flour and was told that they were mites that feed on the adhesive used to seals the packs. I threw those packs out, cleaned the cupboards and started using airtight containers for flour etc.

help, I bet you feel so much better now that your cupboards are clean and tidy, I always do but its one of those jobs that very rarely gets done.

Tinker · 18/07/2002 23:43

What IS the difference between weevils and mites? I always seem to have them in flour and now put flour in air-tight containers but I've still found things in the flour then. Actually, confession, I've sometimes still used the flour!!

oxocube · 19/07/2002 08:17

Not sure, Tinker, but I had these things like flies, but very slow, about 1/2 cm long, which laid maggots in my cupboards! I know, absolutely gross!! (Maybe I too should have changed my name before admitting to this ) I couldn't get rid of them and in the end, threw away everything in my cupboards, which was expensive, but worth it. Yeuch
