Anyone watch Waking the Dead?

Is it me being thick (and I did miss 10 minutes when the phone rang at the beginning of episode 2) but did this make absolutely no sense at all? Who killed the policeman? Did Greta have sex with all those men before her dad "tidied up" after her? I can't believe she had sex with Carstairs, he was a paedophile. And Graham Penn?

Sorry, I hope this post (and the programme) make some sense to someone, because I'm confused!

I'm a fan of the series but I was left bemused too ...

Freckle · 10/08/2004 07:11

Yes, she had sex with those men (not Penn I don't think, but he was supplying the underage children) because she'd been sexually abused by her father and was drawn to similar types of men. She killed the policeman because he knew too much but Boyd let her go.

Yes, it was a really weak episode. I was expecting Boyd to arrest her as they had that cosy chat at the end.

Think Barac was into young girls and penn got killed because he supplied the kids.

rubbish episode.

motherinferior · 10/08/2004 09:01

Oh good, thought it was just me confused and disappointed!

I thought it was really bad. Did she really kill the detective or was he a red herring - murdered by gangland types?

ponygirl · 10/08/2004 09:07

Thanks, guys, I was worried it was just me. I can't believe Boyd would have let her get away with killing a detective. And let her come back to work? Having withheld all that information (at the very least). I'm quite flabbergasted at how a 2-hour drama can be quite good for an hour and three-quarters, and then the end be such a pile of old tosh that doesn't make sense. I kept thinking about it after I went to bed and thinking of more things that didn't hang together. (Like, she was a bit proficient at slashing someone's throat for a first-time killer?) And if she didn't have sex with Penn, why did her father kill him?

God, I'm doing it again. (Get a life, get a life...)

we videoed it - haven't watched it yet.

But I feel that the last few episodes aren't as good as the earlier ones. Especially last week's - all the silly camera angles and flashbacks made my head spin.

And it seems to be going more into the main characters personal life.

It completely confused me too, but thats not hard apparently according to my dh, as I am always asking questions through programmes like this. However I thought all the way through that it had something to do with Greta - bad episode in my opinion.

I was more concerned last night, that my hairdresser would be watching it as I have told her that I want Claire Goose hair style when she visits on Wednesday

aloha · 10/08/2004 09:37

thank you ponygirl!!! I ranted to dh for about half an hour after watching this that is was crap!
It just made no sense AT ALL. If all these men were ardent paedophiles, who didn't even have sex with their wives, why were they going to a hotel room with woman of mature years anyway? Why did they allow themselves to be tied up when presumably a predatory paedophile enjoys the vulnerability of others, not of themselves? How did she meet these men and discover their secret? How did she make contact with them? How did her dad follow her night and day, 24/7? And who killed the policeman? How could Boyd let her go if she was a cold-blooded killer (and as someone said, a remarkably good one for a first-timer). No matter how much he fancied someone he wouldn't just let a cop-killer walk away, surely? And if the dad thought his daughter had killed the policeman, wouldn't he take the rap for that as he was confessing to all the other murders? And the subplot about the Phil Daniels cop trying to smash the gangland ring seemed utterly pointless in the end. I couldn't believe I'd wasted two hours watching something that even the scriptwriters seemed to have given up on. Swizz!

hatmum · 10/08/2004 09:38

Hmmmm. This had me puzzled too (and dh, but that's not uncommon ). I don't know about her having slept with them all beforehand and whether or not she was in cahoots with her dad (who seemed to be implying that he hadn't seen her, she didn't know he was around) but assumed that she had killed detective dave because he knew about Penn's business of supplying children to paedophiles but didn't do anything about it because he rated him too much as an informer. So wrt the others was her dad stalking her and tidying up behind or were they a double act where they lured paedophiles into situations where she could sleep with them and then he would kill them?

Marina · 10/08/2004 09:43

So glad it's not just me, I could not make head nor tail of the whole farrago.
Thank goodness for the sensible linear plotting and excellent acting on "Missing without Trace" on Channel 4 immediately afterwards.

wickedstepmum · 10/08/2004 17:08

I thought it was just me and I'd missed the point completely. Just when I was thinking what a good series this has been and my DH was even watching it with me, and he loathes Trevor Eve!, it suddenly went completely silly and unintelligable. I am soooo glad I am not alone. Thanks all of you

Freckle · 10/08/2004 17:14

Maybe someone should email this thread to the producers. Might make them take more care with future episodes.

bundle · 10/08/2004 17:18

i recorded the first episode and still watched the 2nd one, but it probably made about as much sense to me as to you lot who saw both!

ponygirl · 10/08/2004 20:40

It's not just us! Here and here !
