The Fish And The Spider

The codfish had always doubted the existence of an afterlife. The others all flapped their fins and quivered their gills at the prospect of a celestial pool full of plankton. They tended to forget themselves and so never knew themselves and therefore never doubted themselves but the codfish had a particular vision. Not that this ultimately landed him in a better position. As his fishy soul watched miserably from the corner, the guillotine chop of the machete followed by a few deft horizontal swipes cut through its very heart, and it lamented on the misery of watching oneself being filleted for a Soupe de Morue. The scrape of the scales had flown showers of silverfish glitters in a last display of beauty. Most of them fluttered down but one floated up and lodged itself high in a web. The spider never bothers with trifles of existence and has always considered itself superior to fish. The tremor caused it to scurry out waving its palps and on discovering the catch to be inedible but shiny, gathered up the scale, polished it with a leg hair and propped it up in the centre like a mirror where it intended to groom itself after eating its prey. Only the codfish could hear the tiny gasp of the spider as she looked upon herself, her usual grace giving way to dismay as the true horror of her appearance reflected back. After pausing for a while, one leg tapping threateningly on the scale, she burst into a fit of frenzied activity, scuttling backwards and forwards and sideways, the spinneret pouring its white cord of silk as she wove and the codfish estimated it to be an hour or more before finally, she stopped and stepped back to admire her creation. Even the fishmonger looked up to see what the strange sound was as the spider convulsed itself with cackles of laughter before her twisted work. The codfish took a few turns about the room and shuddered, wondering what terrifying retribution would befall the spider this time, suddenly contented with his inferior yet much safer existence as a ghost fish.
