BT charges for 1471 and ringback

This might have been publicised, but I used 1471 this morning and just happened to hear (usually either hang up immediately or dial 3) the fact that if you do use the 3 call the number back there is now a charge.

Googled it and found here that as of yesterday the charge is 6p (there's no charge if you hang up and ring the number yourself). Worth keeping a pen near the phone at all times!

Also ringback requests now cost 15p.

(Public Service Announcement! )

Yes, I read about this somewhere and have now stopped using it - just out of principle really. I think BT have a few of these hidden charges now, and they are not widely publicised at all

Caller Return (1471) Free
1471 ERASE Free
Reminder Call 20p
Three Way Calling 50p
Ring Back 15p

UK Directory Enquiry Calls
The number for BT's new and improved UK Directory Enquiries service is now 118 500. Calls cost 15 pence per minute, plus a service connection charge of 40 pence per call from BT fixed telephone lines (other network charges may vary).

So, if you call BT Directory Enquiries - write down the number then dial it yourself. Don't let them connect you!!!

Bloody hell, I did that this morning too (dialled 1471 and rang back i mean).

I'll have to tell dp as he is always doing it, and my mom.

wickedstepmum · 02/08/2004 18:36

Thanks for this Janh - have e-mail my nearest and dearest with the info - jolly sneaky!

Chinchilla · 02/08/2004 20:06

What a pile of poo. They get the money for the call that you make when doing 1471, so why add a charge?

Chinchilla · 02/08/2004 20:08

Also, didn't realise that they charged to put you through on Directory Enq's. I thought they did it to be helpful Luckily, I usually say no, because I need the number for future reference.

Janh · 02/08/2004 20:11

BT Directory Enquiries website - 10 free (atm ) enquiries daily (of course you have to be online when you want to find the number but I don't suppose that's a prob for most of us! )

When I bought my new mobile phone the other week the guy tried to get me to sign up for talk talk. He told me that BT were going to be charging for the 1471 service but I thought it was just part of his speel to get me to sign up for talk talk. Looks like he was telling the truth.
I usually just do 1471 to check the number and very rarely press 3. Definitely won't be doing it now.
