Can anyone help me please? Keep getting error msgs when on internet (any site doesn't seem to be fussy), about ActiveX Controls. First of all it says can't open internet page, then says ActiveX controls not safe (or something) and do I want to allow this interaction. If I say no it says my security settings prohibit this action so page may not display properly and takes me to that annoying cannot find server page. Aaarrgh!! Only get about 3 minutes inbetween each time the error msg pops up and its driving me mad!!! I can't access half the pages on Mumsnet and that just isn't on!

This happens on my home computer, deliberately, to protect the computer from cookies and stuff. If you know the website and it's reputable, just keep saying 'yes'. It it annoying though, so I do most of my surfing at work.

It's possible to turn it off, but I don't know how. I would ask dh but he's out discussing 'business' at a pub in the city. If you haven't had a more useful answer by tomorrow I'll ask him how.

I know NOTHING about computers, but have you tried closing everything down and then starting the computer up again. You probably have, so sorry if this is unhelpful .

Thanks - afraid it makes no difference if its closed down etc - it happens everytime I go on the internet now so its taking me a long time to keep checking for messages! Can't understand why its just started happening because I haven't changed anything!

dh says sometimes if you type the error message into a search engine like google help website come up about the error. worth a go!

joanneg · 29/07/2004 23:19

also you could have a look on support.microsoft.com and see if they have any thing

Thanks Joanneq - did try the microsoft site but 'got blinded by science' to be honest . Have googled activeX but hadn't thought of putting actual error msg in tho - will give it a go.

Ok, I've asked dh.

With your browser open, use the 'tools' menu to open 'internet options'.

Then go to 'security', click the 'internet' icon if not already highlighted. Click on 'custom level' and scroll down to the 'Active X' stuff.

On the bits that have the 'prompt' button clicked, change it to 'enable'. It's best to make sure anything to do with 'unsigned' or 'not safe' is clicked on 'disable'.

DH says you should be sure that you have proper virus protection before you turn off any prompts. Hope this helps.
