What are the stoppers for on the bottom of ceramic travel mugs?

It's one of them things that drives me crazy,am I the only person who doesn't know. The holes too I mean they just get water stuck in the.WHAT ARE THEY EVEN FOR?

Without the hole the ceramic would explode in the kiln. The stopper is to stop water getting in when you wash it. And they're double-walled so they're insulated Grin
