Extending above a link detached garage, feasible??

We are in the process of buying a link detachd house, linked by the garage to next doors double garage.

Assuming that structrally there are no issues ( footings etc) would this be possible.

Has anyone done this or know someone who has?

Our planners wouldn't let you do this - local planning policy that requires a 1m separation for the full height of the flank elevation for extensions at first floor level. Intended to prevent a terracing effect (i.e.if your next door neighbour did the same).

We lived in a close where some styles of house had this anyway but the window was at the rear so from the front it looked as if just the garages were linked and had a high roof line. Have any other houses in the street already done this ? If it were possible to keep the existing roof line and you had a dormer it might be more acceptable. You could speak to the Planning Office now and check no similar applications have been turned down and what their policy might be (no guarantees even so).
