rip it up? thats what we have had to do with ALL of ours

doody - if you are allergic I would say get a professional company in to give the carpets a serious clean - they will use v hot water which kills the mites and good detergent, much better than a Vax, which should get rid of the smell. (I sympathise as I am about to move and have a similar cat problem and am getting the carpet men in before we go). If you really don't want to do that, Boots sell a Dust Mite spray (not the Allergen Spray which IMO is hardly effective at all) which will get rid of what is making you wheeze although it won't help the smell. Don't know if febreze would be good for that, maybe try in one room and if it makes a difference you can do the rest. And keep the windows open as much as poss.

Getting proffessionals in to steam clean the carpets will also work.
I had this problem when we moved to our cottage and as we were doing a lot of structural work I wanted to wait until that was done to replace the horrid carpets - they stank of dog - steam cleaning worked brilliantly - good luck

thanks for the info wilbur and Fio2 Very lucky with the weather here, so that at the mo we have had the windows open for nearly 3 weeks now !! We have tried Febreeze and Neutradol which works for about a couple of hours. I think I will try the Boots stuff and then the pro's as the carpets are still in v good nick and if that fails we will have to simply rip them up. Cheers FYI
