I am seriously thinking of turning part of our garden into a field for a Shetland.

it is small though.

interesting what you say about droppins pixel, another little foible of our pony's is that he will not poo or pee in his field (unless access to his shelter is barred for some reason)

he can be right at the other end of the field grazing away, then he'll walk the entire length, back into his stable, get onto his freshly laid bed of lovely clean straw, do a huge dump, and go back out again

VERY annoying if you've just cleaned his bed, but a very good thing when it comes to worm control!
It also is the reason why I know for a fact he poos 11 times a day

Enid · 24/04/2007 14:13

11 tmes a day

well he lays 11 little piles of turd
some not so little

but most of them little enough to be picked up in a single (wide) pitchfork

he is a pooing machine

nailpolish · 24/04/2007 14:38

ooh i love horses, particularly the smell

i love shetland ponies too Enid but are they a practical choice?

welshies sound a better idea

and who suggested a pig? i quite like that idea, although i dont think your dds would

PPH your pony looks adorable

Enid · 24/04/2007 14:39

ok shall I walk out the area

what is a long step roughly? 50 cm?

Personally I think the Tessa woman is the way to go!
Otherwise you will be gathering all the apples, picking up 11 lots of manure every day, dealing with the quagmire (wet weather, pony in small area), has she got a self-filling trough in her field? And a shelter? Will you be carrying out a water bucket twice a day or have a trough put in?

Enid · 24/04/2007 14:51

it is about 75 strides long (I measured my stride at about 1m)

but only 12 strides wide

OP posts:
Enid · 24/04/2007 14:59

ok so that is about 1/4 of an acre

not enough

OP posts:
nailpolish · 24/04/2007 15:06

expatinscotland · 24/04/2007 15:06

OP posts:
Blu · 24/04/2007 17:24

Put it in Tessa-Something's field!

PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 17:37

go and speak to tessa something, she may be happy to have a pony in her field
keeps the grass down etc
but it will be that little bit more hassle than having it in your garden

Enid · 24/04/2007 17:39

yes it wont be the same

we really need to move (house too small, pony yearning)

but house prices are INSANE in west dorset

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 17:44

house prices are insane everywhere

but this is a small, crowded little island getting smaller and more crowded. and if you can afford a bigger mortgage it is the best return on your money you will get in the long term
as well as having the pleasure of living somewhere you like etc etc

my dh always said that when it comes to your house you should borrow as much as you can afford and buy as big as you can because it is cheap money and huge tax free gains. we've made an embarassingly large amount of (paper) money doing just that. as have lots of other people...

PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 17:44

he calls living in a house with a mortgage smaller than the largest you can afford "being underleveraged"

Wags · 24/04/2007 17:51

Enid, MIL lives in Sturminster Newton, been there 11 years and we have watched the house prices go up and up and up! Always fancied living there and doing the horsey thing but probably couldnt afford it even though we live in SE London, a place there with land would be way too much these days. Would love my DCs to have a pony, I did, but worried about how much it will cost around here. Who knows, they may not even be interested

Enid · 24/04/2007 18:59

oh I cant be bothered to move

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 19:03

knight frank have just emailed me this
not your bit of dorset exactly but you could fit a couple of ponies on 130acres

PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 19:06

oh right next door to bovingon/wool
army army
