I am seriously thinking of turning part of our garden into a field for a Shetland.

it is small though.

now tell me you wouldn't want one of these!

PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 11:55
  1. you will then be able to call on horsy woman and fenella crosby-lawrence when you have questions about the pony. and they will be able to boss you about on that subject too.

(you are right lilymolly, but actually looking after a small mature native pony isn't really brain surgery if you have a good source of advice you can call on)

Enid · 24/04/2007 11:55

you are absolutely right

dh's dads cousin is the secretary of one of the local hunts - he has point to pointers

will draft his wife over for coffee [terrified emoticon]

C'mon Enid. You can do it.

Enid · 24/04/2007 11:56

lillymolly you have to start somewhere!

agree that it is not brain surgery

I do love my sisters Leghorns, though.

I must admit to a certain fondness for Moses the Shetland pony, even tho he bit me.

He was such a grumpy old man.

RIP!

Pony and horse are expensive, though, in addition to smelly and sweaty.

Enid · 24/04/2007 11:57

acutally have thought of someone even better

her name is Tessa Somethign-something

she lives in vilalge and loves me and children

she actaully HAS a paddock that she only lensd out to favoured people (I would rather use my own)

she is SUPERB - 60 soemthing with lurid make up and imamculate tweedy clothing

Jilly Cooper?

MrsJohnCusack · 24/04/2007 11:58

I really hope DD is going to be into ponies.

LOl at PPH's extremely accurate description of horsy folks and how to get a decent pony

expatinscotland · 24/04/2007 11:59

Yes, I have found horse woman and in particular widowed horse ranch owner VERY bossy indeed.

Widowed Horse Ranch Owner can even boss around Arabian stallions from neighbouring property.

Can't do much about those tramp mares she boards, though .

PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 11:59

I think I have just added a picture of my pony onto profiles

oh, a few children there too but that was pre-dd

Ponies, YES, Shetlands (and donkeys) NO!

I had a pony when I was young - my uncle bought me one. I would love to be able to live in the country (in an on-of sort of way) and have a horse....
I had a scruffy connemara cross, who dies of twisted gut, and then a fabulous anglo-arab, 15.2hh.

What about one of those sturdy little pigs? Spotty ones? Cute, friendly, delicious?

And would eat the windfalls - you'd have to clear all of those up with a pony, Enid.

PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 12:01

now tessa something something is PURE GOLD

because if she has paddock of her own you can phone her and say "would you mind awfully if snowy had a little holiday chez vous" for 2 weeks every august and one week in the skiing season

if she has been responsible for you getting snowy she is like its godmother, won't be able to refuse you

tessa's your gal!

Enid · 24/04/2007 12:02

YES! and her grandchildren come down from london every now and again and love ponies so they could ride it [further cementing bond between us]

WHY won't my profile show?

RanToTheHills · 24/04/2007 12:03

isn't it 1 acre per horse?
how about a goat?

MrsJohnCusack · 24/04/2007 12:03

that pony looks completely angelic (as do the children)

lilymolly · 24/04/2007 12:04

Dont want to bossy horse women

But I see it all the time, people getting animals without good knowledge, and getting sick of them after a few years.

this is my point, do your homework before you rush into anything, which is what you are doing

I agree getting one on loan, that has a history, the horsey world is not always the most honest, and you must get a pony which is suitable for its purpose. And def utilise any horsey friends you know for advice.
Good Luck

Hillls · 24/04/2007 12:04

Enid do you have any horse care or stable management experience?

MrsJohnCusack · 24/04/2007 12:04

you can click on your name to get it PPH
duuno why you haven't got a clipboard thingy

expatinscotland · 24/04/2007 12:04

I would only want a horse or pony if I could afford to pay someone else to look after it.

Enid is showing her true colours in her penchant for smelly creatures great and small.

On the one hand, it's 'I hate this place', on the other it's schmoozing with Tessa in order to secure a sweaty, pongy beast.

PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 12:06

Where IS that clipboard thingy?

Oh well I'm quite happy having a profile that nobody knows about [new mysterious clique emoticon]

Enid · 24/04/2007 12:06

that pony looks lovely

lillymolly I know lots about ponies despite never having owned one (well I did have one on loan once). but you are quite right to fire a warning shot

PrincessPeaHead · 24/04/2007 12:07

oh clipboard has appeared, how disappointing
