Lycos, Yahoo and MSN all have passable chat rooms but I have found that the conversations on some of them get a bit swamped by youngsters at times and the only way of avoiding it is to use the adult rooms which is not always the sort of thing you want. Got so bad I rarely go in them nowadays (well that and work, DW and DD needing to have their fair share of my time).

There are some more specialised chat rooms, usually regional or topic specific but I have never found them to be that good.

Stop being so sad and get down your local!!!!!

SimonHoward · 03/07/2002 15:31

Rhubarb

One of the reasons I use the PC so much is that my locals are not the sort of places I'd ever want to go to unless I was forced to. Maybe Custardo feels the same?

Rhubarb · 03/07/2002 15:33

I bet Custardo has never even been in her local yet! Anyway, chat rooms are sad, calling yourself names like 'Blue Angel', most of them are Americans, most high school kids and it is just sooo irritating! Give me a good debate about God in a pub with 5 pints of Guinness in front of me any day!

SimonHoward · 03/07/2002 15:36

What makes you think Custardo has not been in her local?

CAM · 03/07/2002 20:00

I think custardo is rhubarb's alter ego

Tinker · 03/07/2002 20:47

'Calling yourself names like Blue Angel' by........Rhubarb

jenny2998 · 03/07/2002 20:51

Perhaps Custardo doesn't go down her local because she has kids at home to look after...

WideWebWitch · 03/07/2002 21:14

Very funny, Tinker!

I've been in chat rooms but found they're mostly full of saddos with no social skills. The conversation seems to be either inane in the extreme (50 people all saying "Hi" to each other, mmm, interesting. Not) and/or sexually explicit. I've tried to widen the range of the conversation (and refused to get drawn into any sex talk) but it rarely gets interesting IME. I've had more fun chatting to the man in the fish shop so I got bored of it. Mumsnet is an exception since a) it's not a chatroom but a discussion forum b)the quality of discussion and contribution is high, c) at least we've all got one big thing in common here. In a lot of these rooms the only thing I've got in common with the others is that we've all got a computer.

WideWebWitch · 03/07/2002 21:17

Sorry custardo, didn't read the bottom and realise that you were asking if anyone knew of any good ones. So my comments won't have been helpful then

Tortington · 03/07/2002 22:31

this is so funny not lafed this hard at the computer since aol started to rule the world and spoiled everything.

Yeah alright Custardo!! Never said I was perfect did I? Anyway, I think Rhubarb is a good nickname - far better than Missy Hotpants or King of Stud (see, I've been in these chat rooms too!).

Did you ever find Beauty's Castle?

ariel · 04/07/2002 14:29

Must agree with rhubarb id much rather have a in depth chit chat at the pub,(but thats only when my darlin mummy offers to baby sit), so i suppose i will have to do with chatting over my comp instead

Rhubarb · 04/07/2002 14:30

Anyway Custardo - who is just sponging off my nickname huh?

jasper · 04/07/2002 21:33

Tortington · 04/07/2002 22:18
