With accommodation allowance, living allowance, flights allowance and most likely a pay rise and promotion (he thinks).

He is going to a meeting tomorrow to negotiate his pay etc.

What do you think then? Should I go and lie on the beach for two years or not?

Have you packed yet?

Carmenere · 21/04/2007 11:04

And don't forget to cancel the milk and the papers

pesme · 21/04/2007 11:04

watch out for the triangle

Carmenere · 21/04/2007 11:04

That is totally fab

ceolas · 21/04/2007 11:06

Don't want to rain on your parade. Have you researched it a lot? We had a friend who went and came back before his job was finished because he said there was a lot of violent crime (he's a teacher)

ooer - do you need things like school fees , private healthcare provision, flights home, accommodation found and paid for, tax accountant negotiated as part of the package, make a list for him. Have friends who have lived on Caribbean islands and found it rather stifling socially after a while - everyone knows everyone else's business - think 2yrs would be my limit tbh. Good luck

anorak · 21/04/2007 11:17

Yes LIZS those things are all on my DH's list.

coelas are you sure that was Bermuda? I was under the impression there was a low crime rate there. Must look into that.

Don't mind being in nosy neighbour situation - have been living in a village for 7 years. I don't mind everyone knowing my business. I don't shag the postman or anything!

I've done business out in Bermuda.

Sit down with stiff drink and watch the Truman Show. And then watch it again. I am absolutely convinced they used Bermuda as inspiration for the place.

The place is paradise for some but a nightmare for others. Those guys wearing shorts, shirts & ties combo's, and the picket fences can make you want to scream after a while. But yes the weather is fab, the people are friendly and the place sure as hell is safe for kids. There is one main street, a handful of restaurants and a couple of small towns. And most things close early. It's a bit like going back to the 1950's - a colleague of mine had to borrow a tie for dinner once (and it wasn't a particularly posh restaurant), and I remember wandering round at 9.15 pm on a Friday trying (and failing) to find anywhere that would serve me dinner (too late in the evening for dinner). You will have to weigh up stuff like that against the bliss it would be for the kids.

You will also need to negotiate a house with a pool becuase the very beautiful beaches have biting bugs on them!!

how exciting! i think all islands are like taht socially, I'm on my second now, and find the nosiness hysterical. Friends moving on from malta to the Grand Cayman soon - I ma jealous of you all!

zippitippitoes · 21/04/2007 11:26

the violence is gang culture and antipathy to foreigners i think

also attitudes to women and domestic violence are questionable

DH's prospective new boss has come to England for a visit and we went out for dinner with him last night. He was lovely and has a wife and two DSs in Bermuda. He came over yesterday morning on the red-eye and only had 2 hrs sleep but he took us to dinner and basicially just said fire away any questions about life in Bermuda.

He has promised us a family visit so we can see what it's like over there before making the decision.

I'm so excited, I feel like a little girl waiting for my birthday!

OMG Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How bad can it be? It's only 2 years after all.

You can go scuba diving, snorkelling, befriend a shark. Just get your dh doing plenty of overtime so you can do some island hopping.

If you live in a village anyway, you'll be fine in a small world. As to the postmen.... well you might change your mind when you get there

kateyp · 24/04/2007 08:51

I went on my honeymoon there - would not hesitate to go back!

I loved the whole "everyone knows everyone else' thing. We watched the Bermuda news one night and the top story was that the hockey team had arrived safely in (I think) Spain. How lovely is that?!

Enjoy it! THe only thing I found a bit odd was when the cruise liners come in as they 'park' right on the main bit of Hamilton (it really does look as though they have just pulled up) and tip out millions of (mainly) American tourists. It gets very busy. Also very expensive.

expatinscotland · 24/04/2007 08:56

I'd be off like a shot.

My brother worked in Bermuda for 2 years and loved it, but did want to come home after 2 years..

I went to visit twice and loved it... although was back in the early 1990s so may have changed since then.

No idea what schools are like.

Re Island hopping - my brother found that it was very expensive to fly anywhere from Bermuda, New York or Miami is the closes (2 hrs flying time)...

I would definately go and enjoy it for a couple of years...

But beware, after seeing those lovely beaches, nothing ever compares (not even cornwall on a hot day)...

emankcin · 24/04/2007 09:06

I want a job where i get to go to Bermuda for two years like your dh.

Or

Where i get to visit Brazil like Carmenare

Or live in Switzerland like Ernest

Or live in venice and then south america like ummm? forgotten Mnetters name.

I think you are organising the next Xmas do Anorak

Budababe · 24/04/2007 09:24

Sounds fab Anorak!

We've moved about quite a bit and I think once you go into it with your eyes wide open and look at it all as a 2 year adventure/break from "real" life, you can have a ball.

Our first posting was Bangkok and it was also for 2 years. We looked on it as an adventure and opportunity to see lots of places we wouldn't see otherwise.

The two years flew past and then we came back to London. Got itchy feet again after a year though and have been moving about every since - so be warned!

anorak · 24/04/2007 12:48

emankcin - even better is to have DH have the job.

I can lard about on the beach drinking rum punch all day while he's at the office
